Canadian coins

Do you guys think Canadian coins should be used at currency in the United States? I have like seven dollars in Canadian quarters, nickels, dimes, and pennies. Sadly non of the Canadian quarters I have aren't made out of silver..... :wah:

In Canada, we accept American coins at par. I think I have an American nickel floating about in my wallet right now. I don't really understand why the same isn't done south of the border, to be honest.

Though you could probably use 'em in a vending machine. Most up here can't tell the difference.

Most places will take them if they are mixed in, but not if you pay with only Canadian coins.

I once had a Canadian penny rejected... it was ridiculous, but since I have a bunch of American ones I just gave them one of those. If it were to happen right now I would make the point of thanking them, seeing as the CAD is worth a fraction of a penny more than the USD. :D

The Northeast should accept Canadian money!

That must have just changed because I remember 3 months ago when I looked it up it was USD$1 : CAD$1.75.

Really? :wtf:

The Canadian dollar has been fluctuating between just over par and about $0.90 US for the better part of the last three years. It's been quite some time since the exchange rate was in that range.

I hate to say it, but if you exchanged at that rate you got REALLY ripped off.

I believe that the towns along the borders typically do allow you to use Canadian currency.

Not possible since the all time historical low the CAD has been at was $0.62 USD in 2002 (ie 1 USD = 1.62 CAD, its not an error, its just that 1/.62 = 1.62  ). The CAD was as high as $1.10 USD in 2007. It fell off a little after that but as others have said, has been at parity for a long time now, finishing a fraction of a penny above the USD quite often.

I've never had any luck using a canadian coin in a vending machine. They are also rejected in those coin counting machines as well.

The Bermudan dollar is pegged exactly to the US dollar, so if any alternate currency should be accepted it's that one.....

^But wouldn't you rather spend Bermudan dollars in Bermuda? I hear the winters are kinda nice down there. ;)

Once when I was a small child, I scraped together some coins for the ice cream man and asked for a yummy popsicle. My payment was rejected because one of my pennies was Canadian (unbeknownst to me). I was devestated! I had to search my house for another penny and thankfully found one.

Huh. That's surprising. I've even been able to use US $1 coins in vending machines (and for my laundry) despite them being a recognizably different shape from the loonie.
