Captain Pike

Actually, I'm quite relieved that they didn't include April. One less thing for them to fuck up.

The best point of view I've heard on this film came from RedLetterMedia's review. Specifically, this was not "the next Star Trek movie." This was yet another big movie remake of an old 60's tv show, with no real connection to that show beyond the title and the character names, and playing on all the tropes and gimmicks that the general public thinks were a part of the original show, but really weren't.

This time, they just happened to do it based on Star Trek.

As such, it has no bearing or impact upon the preexisting franchise, and in the end, is easily, and completely, disposable.

You and that beeping LOL. You're both right.

BUT if you think of it as an ALTERNATE reality, which is not unheard of in Star Trek, it goes down the gullet easier.

Actually, Pike in the new movie is alright.

And anybody can make any move and call it Star Trek XII - if I like it fine, if not, fine. If it draws new fans into "the franchise" (sounds like a cult) or not, fine again.

Maybe the best Pike is the guy from the end of Trekkies. I cried when I saw him Piking on the side of the road first time I saw it.

Hunter's Pike was miserable, self-doubting, sexist and began Trek's tedious Enterprise Captain Horse Obsession.

Greenwood's Pike, aside from picking up twentysomething guys in bars, was great. There was no doubt that he was the man in charge, or that he knew what he was doing.

So... exactly like every single other episode or film in all of Trek? It's not a holy scripture, it's a TV show and film franchise. Stop obsessing that this or that bit you don't like is somehow gonna hurt the bits that you do.

Star Trek: Enterprise blatantly contradicted one of TOS finest episodes, "Balance of Terror". No matter how hard fanboys wank out excuses and bullshit workarounds, they are incompatible. Yet "Balance of Terror" wasn't ruined one iota by the existance of "Minefield", or vice-versa for TOS hating ENTers. Ditto the rest of the franchise.

^ Miserable? Yes, we saw him on a down moment at the beginning of The Cage. He'd been through a lot and was showing his human side. But he didn't remain that way. And this was the beginning for him and his crew... naturally, there's always some self-doubt. Sexist? It was the times, man. That's what was written for him.

I thought Hunter did an admirable job. I think in time he would have grown into the role and definitely maintained a convincing air about him. But... I don't know if he'd eventually learn to relax, as Shatner did. His Kirk was a more dynamic and engaging personality. Of course, we see Shatner change over time. I found him a bit too overdone in the 3rd season. By the same token, Hunter may have brought more color to his role as the 1st season progressed.

Remember, we have just ONE episode to judge him by. You've got to give him some leeway.

Greenwood was great. He's a very good actor and I thought he pulled off the role well. Different than Hunter. Maybe better... but again, Hunter had just one shot on a very tenuous production that was just breaking the ice. Abrams is a very slick and experienced executive producer/director, leaps and bounds ahead of Roddenberry.

Let's not get carried away here. For one thing, Roddenberry didn't have anywhere near as much to work with compared to what Abrams had handed to him. Plus, Roddenberry was trying to produce a television show for grownups, whereas Abrams was putting together a brainless blockbuster for ADHD teenyboppers who probably can't even spell "Star Trek".

Even without ST09 Abrams track record in TV and film is pretty impressive ( like the product or not) and lets face it, Roddenberry's is close to being a one trick pony.

I'm no teenybopper, I dont have ADHD and my marks in spelling were pretty good when I was in school last Century, so lets dispense with the name calling, stereotyping and tarring with a broad brush. It does little to help your case and probably hurts it.

^ Exactly. The production values of ST09 were excellent. If it had adhered really well to the Star Trek universe of TOS, and had a little more depth as opposed to eye candy, a lot of the naysayers here would have embraced it enthusiastically. Abrams has made some great productions in the past--there is a reason for his notoriety and demand.

This is my favorite Captain Pike.

Beep & blink your light once if you agree. Twice if you don't.

The wheelchair bound version was intriguing but... limited. ;) I'd take the pre-accident version any day. :D

Incidentally, there's an avatar contest going on for "The Menagerie" episode. If you haven't seen it already, check it out and vote.

I loved both hunter and greenwood I'm glad that he was in the new film hopefully I like to see in the next film how pike gets injured and gets put into the bleeping chair !!!

He's already been injured and confined to a chair. Fate's way of sorting out the timeline as far as it can, no matter what. Doesn't mean he has to end up beeping - or departing to a retirement on Talos IV.

Hunter was good, but the character was a little too serious. ( You can see traces of that in Season One Kirk and TNGs Picard) Shatner really changed how "the Captain" would be portrayed.

I think even Pike would've lightened up some had Hunter signed up for another go.

"As in all ship's doctors are dirty old men."

We were just catching Pike on a very bad day.
