Actually, it's not illegal to fake your own death. (So long as you're not faking it to escape prosecution, do it in a manner that risks other lives or try and to "profit" from the faking of it.)

It's not? I thought it was a felony, because I've heard of people doing it and they got arested for it.

Depends on how you fake it and why you faked it. But it's not illegal for me to say "I killed myself" and disappear to somewhere else, change my name and start a new life.
