iPad 2 - what's the latest buzz - heard anything?

Just got my refund from the IRS and my treat to myself this year will be an iPad. My friends have been telling me to hold off until iPad 2 comes out next month or April. What have you heard about it?

If you haven't bought an Apple iPad yet, think twice about waiting for the perfect Black Friday deal -- rumors are already swirling about the next version of the tablet PC, unofficially called the iPad 2.
The http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2010/11/22/apple-ipad-april-rumors/#world is particularly abuzz over one analyst’s prediction that Apple’s next iPad will hit retail shelves in April 2011. Brian Marshall of Gleacher & Company predicted that the upgraded hand-held computer will make its debut well after the holiday season in April.
"I think April is the proper time-frame for an 2," Marshall told Computerworld magazine. "Since I'm projecting that Apple will release a CDMA iPhone in March, both will help to equalize Apple's seasonality."
The prediction ties into a recent report in industry trade magazine DigiTimes, which claimed that the design and suppliers of the iPad 2 have already been chosen.
The Taiwanese tech industry publication reports that Ibiden, Tripod Technology and TTM Technologies are parts suppliers for the iPad’s successor. The magazine's report also indicated that more suppliers will be added to the source list in February, when shipments of the next-generation iPad begin ramping up.

I heard it will be lighter and have cameras on front and back. No more word than that.

Can't say I'm that upset, really. I've had my iPad since last May and do not regret it. I definitely don't need cameras...Won't be selling my iPad 1.

The iPad2 is rumored to be out anywhere between April and September, but there's no concrete information, it's all just rumor.

That said, the tablet space is about to explode... the "real" Android tablets will be shipping before the end of the month, starting with the Xoom and followed by many others, the webOS powered HP TouchPad will be out this summer, the Blackberry PlayBook will be out soon... even if you do decide to go with Apple's offering, if you don't need something immediately it's probably a good idea to hold off to see how this all develops over the next few months.

I saw the Samsung tablet when I was making current comparisons to the iPad and the Samsung was very inferior to the iPad.

You seem to favor the android operated hardware - is that correct? If so why?

The current Samsung Galaxy Tab is only 7 inches and has software not really designed for use as a tablet. The new tablet that I linked to there, the Galaxy Tab 10.1, is 10 inches and has Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) which is designed for tablet use. So it will be very different from Samsung's current offering.

I personally prefer Android over iOS for a multitude of reasons, but that's just me. Everyone has different needs and priorities though, and mine probably aren't yours. But since the Android tablets aren't really out yet and will be in just a few weeks, I'd say it's probably worth it to wait and see how well they're reviewed... maybe even go to a store and try them both to see which you like better.

There's a good preview of the new Android tablets here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RH1snkwthJc

And here's one for the HP TouchPad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwI8QYa3fbg

OTOH, if you don't want to wait and feel you'd be happy with an iPad, there's no reason not to go for it. Can't wait for new hardware forever!

Way back when the Ipad 1 came out I heard people saying to wait until the next generation to come out because it will have true multi-tasking ability. I have no idea if the Ipad 2 has that but I hope Apple was thinking ahead.

But judging by what has been written, they may use the old OS and go for lighter and thinner and that would be a shame.

Rest assured that Apple is watching the competition, so I expect at least one camera - personally, I think, it makes only sense to support FaceTime, the Apple video calling service.

Faster, lighter, more memory, yes. The first edition is already iconic. So, are they going to reinvent it? No.

In April? Yes.

I got the iPad when it first came out and I don't think I will be upgrading either. These are my guesses. Lighter and thinner, probably without the curved back. A dual core processor, with at least 512 memory. I have heard the rumor of two camera also, which is probably true but I don't understand a backwards camera. I can't imagine taking photos with my iPad. It is to large and gangly to get a good picture with. A much better and larger speaker and a better display but not Retina display like iPhone 4.

Here's an interesting comparison chart of pads available now or coming out:

Specs are fairly meaningless since I would imagine that they would perform well. I think it comes down to which software you like the best. I am getting a tablet this year, so I am interested in what is coming out as well.

Don't forget RIM's playbook is being released soon as well.

Agreed however when I went to the Apple Store and checked out the IPad last weekend I was honestly surprised that it didn't have a USB port. The explanation I was given from the Apple staff was that the unit was designed for basically wireless connectivity only. The Zoom apparently has both options.

The Xoom is actually priced competitively with the iPad for the most part... the wifi only Xoom will be $600ish, the same as the 32gb wifi iPad. Apparently the 16gb iPads don't sell nearly as much as their more expensive brethren for some reason, so I guess everyone decided to compete in the higher price range.

Bleh. Well, I guess people like them, I'd just rather have a laptop for that kind of money. Then again, I do not have a job that requires the kind of mobile data entry iPads are useful for.

I think I have a bizarre explanation for that. Either the Apple store sales people don't work on commission at all or it's very low commission because the sales people were directing people away from the 32 GB units because most people dump any data they have after downloading and use up to the 16 GB and the extra 16 is superfluous and unnecessary for average users.

Or, because the 32GB sell too well, they are overstocked on 16GB and trying to clear them from inventory. ;)

I had initially the WIFI 16GB and noticed that my iTunes media alone, mostly the music, was taking up almost all the space. I don't even have that much music, I would think, less than 4k songs. Now, with the 64GB version, I don't bother checking anymore.

The way the Apple Store sales person was explaining why for most the 16Gb was sufficient is that for most folks you'd have enough space to download from your hard drive at home enough entertainment files for a day or so and then swap them out the next day for viewing and/or listening to something else.

So unless one travels over an extended period of time or listens / watches hundreds of hours of entertainment on the unit daily it's superfluous.

For me, I have a 5 terabyte external hard drive at home and store everything on it at home and would swap out files as needed. It is ultimately a preference thing though.

Yeah, I don't really have a need to have all of my music on my tablet. I already have access to it on my phone.
