I suggested this as a kind of tongue in cheek thing in a different thread...but if the Trek writer's wanted to include a gay character and subvert every single trope that would have cropped up, why not make Tuvok gay?
IMHO it would have been the best way to include a gay Trek character in the show (the novels do it well), by just making it so understated and not at all an issue. When mention is made of Tuvok's wife, just subsitute the word wife for husband...the character is gay and Trek once again shows that if you want to push the boundaries, you do it by just including the character and not drawing attention to them.
