Blake's 7 Revisitation (rewatch)

Re: Balke's 7 Revisitation (rewatch)

The whole region thing is really stupid, and some countries refuse to use it.

In Australia it's illegal to sell a player that's region locked. It MUST be region-free. New Zealand is considering offering the same legislation, although currently most stores only stock region-free players anyway cos no one buys region-locked players.

There used to be a market for Region 1 DVDs in New Zealand but that disappeared about 3 years ago when it was ruled illegal to sell them here, but the PAL/NTSC hybrid system was left in players.

Re: Balke's 7 Revisitation (rewatch)

Hubby and I watched "The Keeper" and "Star One" last night. "The Keeper" is a bit embarrassing with the Charl and his mad sister chewing up the scenery, with enough unnecessary shouting to put even Brian Blessed to shame. Still, Jenna finally gets to do more than just look pretty, and the actress does a good job with it.

"Star One" was much better; it sets up a good pace, getting more and more frantic as the aliens approach. It's also a great transition from Blake-as-leader to Avon-as-leader. There's something about this episode that had a very "Tom Baker Doctor Who" feel about--the sets, the costumes, the mandatory rock quarry---but of course, is far more serious in tone.

I do like how Blake's fanaticism is really spelled out here; Blake says he needs to know "that HE was right." Cally's reaction shows a bit of a lightbulb reaction; she's actually shocked and maybe even a little disappointed. Another bit I really liked, that really spells out the whole Avon/Blake relationship is the argument before they attach Star One.

Avon: I never doubted that. I never doubted your fanaticism. As far as I am concerned you can destroy whatever you like. You can stir up a thousand revolutions, you can wade in blood up to your armpits. Oh, and you can lead the rabble to victory, whatever that might mean. Just so long as there is an end to it. When Star One is gone it is finished, Blake. And I want it finished. I want it over and done with. I want to be free.

That's one heck of an image--wading in blood--but it's even more surprising that Blake doesn't argue with it.

DailyMotion has the scene up HERE; it starts at about the 6 minute mark.
Good stuff.

A fews years back that Australian Compeition and Consumer Commission ruled that region encoding was anti-competive practice.

The ban on region locked DVD players must of been a result of that decision but nothing ever made the press about it the outcome.

Yeah Avon gets it, nobody else on board does (except maybe like you say, Cally. Jenna and Gan are completely taken in, and Vila doesn't really care).

There are times Blake scares the shit out of me, and in a similar situation I'd sooner follow Avon than Blake any day.

Re: Balke's 7 Revisitation (rewatch)

Well Avon would only sacrifice you if it was absolutely neccesary for his own survival, Blake would sacrifice you just to make a point...

Bruce Purchase, who played Gola, apparently had long conversations with Sally Knyvette (Jenna) during the making of this episode, and convinced her to return to study at university, thus when her contract came up for renewal she decided not to continue with the third series (although she was also apparently growing disheartened by the lack of screen time and the Blake/Avon/Vila focus the show was taking).

Re: Balke's 7 Revisitation (rewatch)

Good for her. There aren't too many people willing to risk a regular paycheck in favor of getting an education. And her website says she's a teacher now; I think that's great.

By the second series, Jenna really got shoved to the side and had little to do except look admiringly at Blake. Leaving was probably much better for her career in the long run.

Re: Balke's 7 Revisitation (rewatch)

Well she definitely returned to acting at some poine because she married Frazer Hines in Emmerdale Farm!

Re: Balke's 7 Revisitation (rewatch)

But it looks like she's still teaching on the side.

We watched "Aftermath" last night. I'd forgotten how young Dayna was, compared to the rest of the cast.
As the first "Avon-centric" episode, there's a real change in tone from the first two seasons.

You're definitely supposed to have forgotten how young she is by the time "Animals" rolls around...

I think most people would just prefer to forget about "Animals" altogether.

Too true.

I actually missed that episode when it first aired in Australia. My sister was in hospital at the time so we went to see her.

She wasn't too happy when we visited and my dad pointed out I gave up on watching Blakes 7 to come and see her but hindsight shows I wasn't wasn't missing anything.

It did have that small blooper of Avon slipping as he runs into the lab...
