Dick York, or Dick Sargent?

I liked Dick York better, he had more of a physical presence and was a good looking enough man to catch the eye of a beautiful witch like Samantha. He also seemed to be more exasperated than angry at Samantha and her family's use of witchcraft.

Dick Sargent, while a fine comic actor, seemed to smug for a man who had in-laws who could literally turn him into nothing.

So who's your pick and why?

I liked the bigger guy - as a kid I always found him kinda hot. Not sure which "Dick" he was however.

I think you're talking about York, Sargent was thin and tall and had a big head.

What, no Will Ferrell? Thank god. That movie was terrible.

Anyway, Dick York is my favourite and quite a bit of it is because he was Darrin first. I wonder how this vote would have turned out if Sargent started in the role and was later replaced by York.

Dick York. He seemed better able to portray Darrin as if he loved Sam for who she truly was. Sargent too often gave me the impression that he was putting up with the 'nonsense' as if it were a phase that would pass.

York was funnier, he was good at playing Darrin as near the end of his rope and about to lose it. Sargent was more low-key and dry and seemed to take the witchcraft stuff more in stride, and his feuding with Endora wasn't as spirited.

York.

Sargent is fine when interacting with Samantha and still makes me laugh. But as mentioned above, his relationship with the in-laws doesn't work quite as well as York's. I don't think the difference is significant enough to affect my enjoyment of an ep though.

LOL. I think that, as was said earlier, if Sargent had been the first Darrin, the poll would be much more in his favor. We get used to the first one, so the second one has a much more difficult time being the same character.

^^^Or, Sargent just sucked at the job, and ratings would tank and bring the show to the brink of cancellation until the casting people make the brilliant decision to replace Sargent with York.

This one's not a matter who came first.

Dick York. Easily. I always found him more expressive. Dick Sargent was too much of a stiff.

The are sort of a blur in my mind now; a big blurry Darrin, either of which I accept fully. That might just be a product of exposure at a young age.

I loved them both, but I guess I always liked Sargent better as a kid. Sargent may have been a bit stiff but that made him more of an anchor in my mind (when he wasn't being turned into a goat or a mule or the whatever the animal of the week was).

York's buggy eyes always creeped me out when I was little. I got over that as I got older. Maybe that is what made him so expressive.

Actually it was. That's what I liked about him. It was a comedy. He had comedic timing and comedic expressions and he just played like he had genuine emotions. Sargent always looked to me like he was trying to fake emotion and failing miserably.

Wow. No love for Sargent.

Not true. I liked both guys. York was the more believeable Darrin since he was more prone to anger than Sargent was. He'd just fly off the handle at the smallest thing.

One strike against Sargent (although it not fair to blame him for this, since it was most likely the writers), is that by the time he came onto the show, they spent most of their time remaking York's episodes. I didn't much like that.
