You and a holodeck

Maybe this is a totally silly distinction on my part, but while I'd definitely use a Matrix-style jackup to have wet, steamy and sweaty monkey-love sessions with all sorts of actress-avatars, I don't think I'd do so in a holodeck. First, I don't think I could trust the holodeck to really produce all the necessary sensations and smells, and second, there's a big difference between that which occurs in the mind, even with digital enhancements, and actually leaving the holodeck with a hollow dick.

Alas, true...

So, for the holodeck fantasy, I'd be tempted to see the following sites:

- Ancient Athens, Rome, Egypt, etc.
- The Titanic leaving Liverpool
- The three San Francisco World's Fairs
- The West Wing (NBC sets and the real thing)
- Jurassic Park; also, real dinosaurs
- The 1701-D, woot!

But if I had to choose just one?

... I'd direct a movie adaptation of The Golden Compass, with the actors I choose, no censorship or budget constraints, and use the finished product to jump-start a directorial career.

:bolian:

A simulation of Mount Olympus, home of the gods of Greek mythology.

Suffice it to say, the simulation would not contain any of the male gods.

I don't need a holodeck. I have dreams, which are free, come to me at night (thus freeing my daytime to do whatever tasks I wish to do), provide a variety of programs to test my mind and soul, and have their own built-in safety features when things go wrong (I wake up).

Besides, who needs a holodeck when you've got a bed, quilt and several pillows with which one can build a small fort?

This is an adorable response. :) I, too, am very grateful to remember my dreams. Sometimes there are stupid or fragmented ones--but when I get a good dream, it's worth it and sometimes even a writing inspiration. :)

But what about the bit about making a fort out of pillows? :D

My dreams have only twice provided me with some inspiration for real life: the second time, there was a song that I had never heard before, with lyrics I had never heard before; while the first time was a strong suggestion as to how my love life should go (needless to say, it failed horribly :guffaw: :sigh:).

I would be Sir Galahad in Castle Anthrax, ala Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I would make sure that the "grave peril" of a castle of lonely beautiful nubile teenage girls would be mine to face alone without hope of rescue.

... except that, never fear, I, Sir Lancelot, shall rescue from your peril.

What if Galahad had stayed at the castle with Zoot and Dingo and the rest of the four score and ten Virgins aged 17 to 19 and a half? He probably would have ended up with 89 mothers-in-law.

He probably would be better off stealing Prince Herbert, or Princess Lucky (with the big tracts of land) from Sir Lancelot.

All he has to do is say "computer, end program".

I think holodecks would probably mean the end of civilisation. That's probably why no aliens have visited us.

I'd upload one of m video games so that I could play it IRL. I have no idea which one, though. It would be a hard choice.

I'd ban mosquitos, though.

You are wise.

I'd create a place where I could be alone, undisturbed by any person, society, or technology. It would be high up into the mountains, and there would be a small stream, by which would be a tiny stone cottage. Inside, in the main living area, would be where I would keep all of my books, old scientific instruments, papers, it would have a wood stove in the center of the room, and an old worn out desk with a soft, overstuffed leather chair in the corner. It would have a small bedroom, tiny kitchen (with an old well hand pump faucet), and a bath, just for personal needs.

Outside, in the front, would be an old wooden rocking chair, the front of the cottage would face the Sun, and by day I could read my books, feel the warm breeze, and sit by the stream, dipping my feet in the cold, clear water. I'd listen to the birds sing and chirp, watch squirrels alight from tree branch to tree branch. At night, I could lay outside and watch the stars, light a crackling fire, or be inside and sit in my chair, and by lantern light write my papers or study my books, my dog asleep by my chair, happy and content, and I could go to this place any time I wanted.

That sounds awesome J! I'd love to visit that place too, although if I were to do it I might bring a few of the amenities closer inline with today's technology (faucets, shower etc).

One of the things I would do is recreate various Star Trek starships and starbases and just explore. I've always wanted to be able to just wander around the Enterprise (any of them) and discover everything hidden in all of its nooks and crannies.

Yes. I'm a total nerd.

I'd also recreate the world of some of my favourite books so I could meet all the characters and explore their world.

That's pretty close to the kind of thing I'd like to have... one exception though: I'd have a log-cabin!

I would recreate Queen's Wembley '86 concert and replace Brian May with myself.

That would be awesome.

Funnily enough, there are online instructions on how to construct a pillow fort

This is like using the instructions that come with lego, or transformers. :(

Maybe this is a totally silly distinction on my part, but while I'd definitely use a Matrix-style jackup to have wet, steamy and sweaty monkey-love sessions with all sorts of actress-avatars, I don't think I'd do so in a holodeck.

Well, you're just missing out then. :p

I'm telling you, make a real-life holodeck, and all the current hoop-la about copyright/IP will pale in comparison to the fuss kicked up by what people will get up to with facsimilies of their favourite actress/actor in the privacy of their own homes, and the underground industry that will spring up overnight to cater for this. And the regular porn industry will have more of a bonanza than with the internet.

Would give a whole new meaning to "fair usage" too. :D

Speaking strictly seriously for a moment, wouldn't the bigger "concern" be people making holo-versions of people the know in real life and can't get? I think the "porn star" novelty would were off and you'd have a lot people building synthetic lives they can't or don't have.

I think this is a better idea...it would probably seem more real too...and things taking place in the subconscious seem more intense...like alot of dreams I have had throughout my life.

I settled on what I would do...as silly as it sounds I would play through the 10 seasons of FRIENDS in the holodeck...at various times being different characters. ;)

I'd load up some Elvis concerts and be part of the crowd.

I'd have a program where I can have a lightsabre, not necessarily be a part of the Star Wars movies it'd just be cool to wave it around a bit.

I'd like to explore some different civilisations, to see what it was like to live in Ancient Greece, talk with Plato and Aristotle. Walk around Rome etc that'd be pretty interesting. In a similar vein I think it would be quite interesting to explore hypothetical scenarios. What would the world be like if Rome hadn't fell and stuff like that.

I'd love to see what the baseball world would have been like had the '94 strike never occurred. Would the Expos have won the World Series? :vulcan:

TBH, unless it's done for commercial gain, I can't see how they have more cause to complain than if someone used their imagination, or painted a picture of them, or wrote some dodgy fanfic type story, or whatever. It's not real, or even emotional really; it's just scratching a physical itch.

Sure, it would lead to some social awkwardness if they found out, but the same applies to the examples I just listed too. I'm sure holodecks have password-protected programs.
