Doctor Who? (or the Doctor's name)

The only way I could see the Doctor's real name being revealed is part of a ratings ploy if the series has entered into a bad time. Otherwise I don't think it will ever be revealed.

They've already made a "big thing" about River Song knowing his real name and they're promised to make a "big thing" about River Song in the upcoming season: maybe they're building up to a revelation.

We found out Uhura's first name, and that was bad enough because it violated an aspect of Roddenberry's conception of the character, that her name meant "Freedom", full stop.

That was actually nice because some of the novels had been using "Nyota" as her first name for years (not sure where they got it), and it was good to finally have that solidified.

I very much doubt the casual viewer gives two hoots about what the Doctor's real name is, or even especially notices we don't know it. He's the Doctor, that's good enough for me.

I consider myself more than a casual viewer and I don't give two hoots about his real name either. There's no need to know it and I hope that no show runner ever decides to give him one.

Maybe if there's a "final" episode they should do something like the musical cue/clue from the final episode of Inspector Morse.

Should the series ever end permanently, will we ever see an answer to the title question-the Doctor's real name? Or should it never, ever be revealed as it's part of the mystique of the series?

Question is, why would there be a last ever episode? I don't think anyone could ever announce a final Bond movie, or last ever Sherlock Holmes, or Pride and Prejudice adaptation.

The name itself being secret I think is part of the appeal. The mysterious Doctor in the Tardis. How crap would it be, and instantly forgettable, to reveal the name. Tarquin Jones or something.

It might not be so much important what the Doctor's real name is as it may be what other names the Doctor may have had in the past. Merlin? Belial? Solomon? The Destroyer of Worlds? Santa Claus?

I don't think we should ever find out the Doctor's real name. But I do wonder if perhaps the reason he hides it is not that it's something universally recognized and universally loathed.
