How has ST: Online changed since release?

PTRACER

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
Has it changed at all, gameplay wise? Bug wise? Number of players wise? Price wise?

The last I saw of it, it was basically a point and click online game, where the ship/space station models (e.g. DS9) were way oversized and combat was an annoying point and click affair making it no different to Guild Wars. It also had HORRIBLE reviews.

Is this still the case?

Some of it is still like that.
But in the year since launch the game has made a million improvements nonetheless.
It's still recognizably the same game but it is beginning to fulfill it's potential and more very awesome improvements are on their way.
You should check it out for yourself.
If you want you can browse the screenshot thread to get some real good impressions.

The thing that's important to me is proper 1st person or 3rd person over-the-shoulder combat. I don't want to click a bar at the bottom containing special skills and potions that I magic out of thin air. Will ST:O ever have this do you think?

It's far from that. It's still a typical MMO interface. Although there is talk about a big revamp of ground combat going on.
Some aspect of that was mouse targeting instead of auto-targeting.
So you might partly get your wish somewhere down the road.
Although you can get pretty close to what you imagine already. You can steer your character with the mouse on ground and space and you can keybind pretty much everything. So almost no need to click anything really.

No. There have been improvements but core gameplay has not changed since Beta.

Ground combat is the #1 problem with this game, IT IS AWFUL.

I've been playing for a month now and I'm really enjoying myself, but I have to say that there are some flaws that I think could have been avoided, but shouldn't be too hard to fix.

Ground combat on the other hand is woeful. It's basically just about outflanking and attacking the exposed enemies, directing fire also works. Apparently they're working on improving it so I'm really looking forward to that.

One thing that I can't see them fixing is the nature of the Federation. They're way too aggressive for my liking. Diplomacy is very weak, there's no stun setting.

One way that I think they could improve this is to make a reward system for killing as few enemies as possible. In certain missions, there's really no point in killing everthing that moves, why not allow the player the option to fight? If you want to fight, you get the loot, if not, you get diplomacy or some kind of xp.

I think also, that for lower level players, the game doesn't really offer enough. I've just made it to Commander and I'm now seeing alot more options in battle. This makes it far more interesting, but the thought of going through the lower ranks again doesn't appeal to me one bit.

With more varied missions that make you THINK rather than just pew pew all the time, I think this game would be truly great.

I played it for a couple of months after release and then drifteda way. After hearing about the latest update, I'm going to give it a try again, so I just ordered a two-month gamecard.

I wasn't in a fleet when I left, should I join the Trek BBS one?

Would be a good timing to do, since we are reorganizing the fleet right now.
We would gladly take you in.
Just give us your handle and you will shortly receive the invitation.
You can also contact me in game for that, when I'm online.
