Titan

While STO is probably more popular than the novel tie ins, it's probably also more in the high ten thousand subscriber range, possibly low hundred thousand. It did hit 1 million when it first came out but I'd guess it hasn't been that high in a while.

^ According to MMO Data, STO peaked at about 105k subscribers and is now down to just below 60k. Keep in mind, these are by no means official numbers, but your 1 million figure was, IIRC, mentioned as the number of existing accounts, not subscriptions. Even then, 1 million seems highly unlikely in terms of valid retail accounts.

By contrast, Star Trek Online has millions of subscribers. If a new Trek show or movie were to draw on any tie-in continuity, it would be STO.

That would actually be pretty cool. Michael A. Martin's The Needs of the Many was fantastic, and since it referenced the game, novel, film, and alternate realities, all wrapped up within the STO universe, it could work incredibly well for newcomers and old-school fans.

I have also read the book and it is the first one of Michael's i did not actually like, although proberly not due to any fault of his own. The whole novel just felt a bit forced to me, espically being co-wrote by Jake Sisko. We already have 2 universes to deal with, i dont feel the need to novalise the third lol ... just my opinion i guess it prob made pocket shed loads so :)

Maybee those numbers are an estimate he didnt say there were accurute numbers. Im preety sure only Cryptic would give you those.

I'm not sure about the sales figures for the Titan books, but my general feeling is that they're not the best received series in Treklit at this time.

We do know that the first "Titan" was rushed into reprint before it was released, due to healthy pre-sales orders from bookshops.

"Synthesis" is definitely in reprint, too - I was seeing second printings on book shelves only a few weeks after the first printing, so it's still exceeding expectations.

Aren't part of the purpose of the novels to tell stories that wouldn't necessarily be able to be told as a film or television episode but still using the framework and rules of the television series? The point of writing a novel is being able to have a bit of freedom that normally you wouldn't in writing a screenplay right?

I totally agree with that however as i have said some of these novels are at least straight to DVD material. Imagine how Sythensis or The Destiny Trilogy or Over a torrent see would look In HD. Beacuse the story has alrieady been wrote, that freedom would be included in the screenplay

I think the point Admiral Young was making was that those books would be prohibitively expensive to produce as a movie, TV show, or especially as a direct to DVD movie. A single book of the Destiny trilogy would have a budget of something like 1.7 bazillion dollars (estimated).

Doing Star Trek stories in print allows for anything to happen because there are no budgetary constraints.

Yep. People often said that "New Frontier" should "be the next TV series", but Peter David himself has commented that he'd prefer to keep doing NF as novels and comics because he'd deliberately made choices, right from the beginning, that would make the budget impossible.

A bit offtopic maybe, but since this is a topic about Titan...

I'm about to start Destiny and after that Typhon Pact. I've never read any of the Titan books. Will it be difficult to follow at times?

Nah, each one is pretty stand alone.

Ah, that's relief then. Thought I had to order 4 other books first. :D

However after you have finished with the typhon pact it may be worth backtracking and getting them, beacuse they will explain some of the characters from destiny and TP

And ..... There dam good books ;)

Was planning on that, but I'll be reading Vangaurd first I think.

I just want to point out one correction (and by it I in no means want to suggest that the 24th century setting will be revived on film). While First Contact was more profitable than the two TNG films that followed it, both Insurrection and Nemesis were profitable. That doesn't mean they made a lot of money, but the worldwide box office gross was more than the production cost on both films.
