Re: Would you mind if X-MEN: FIRST CLASS retconned X-MEN: THE LAST STA

I hate the idea of ignoring movies just to make another movie. I'd rather have a smart writer find a way to "repair" a series without ignoring things.

Re: Would you mind if X-MEN: FIRST CLASS retconned X-MEN: THE LAST STA

I think X3 should still happen. ;)

For the win! :techman:

I just realized my post might be taken the wrong way since some people are calling X-Men: The Last Stand "X3" on here.

There's a movie called X2 but no movie called X3, which is why I say there should be one made, and thus overriding X-Men: The Last Stand. :)

Would be very easy to make to. Just say 10 years have passed since Jean died and do the Dark Phoenix saga again with the same actors.

Re: Would you mind if X-MEN: FIRST CLASS retconned X-MEN: THE LAST STA

I thought the first three X-Men movies were alright. The first has the trouble of introducting the universe, X2 gets it right, and The Last Stand gets a little iffy. TLS doesn't have a lot of rewatchability and too much of a different vibe than the first two, but it's a tolerable flick. What else do you expect from the third desperate sequel of a franchise? Return of the Jedi? Godfather 3? Perhaps I didn't expect so much from The Last Stand, so I'm not that disappointed in it.

However, I really think Wolverine was dumb. I don't remember a thing about it and I think it was a total desperate waste to clinge on a Logan ride in hopes of keeping the franchise going.

I am excited about Frist Class because right now it can go either way. I'm not worried about these little things that are coming out because we don't know the whole story as of yet or what they have planned for any sequels. In theory, I'd like to see a Frist Class trilogy that leads up to the first film as best as possible.

If they make too many changes in this trilogy, then I suppose its open to interpretation, or perhaps they will somehow sanction an alternate reality like Trek did. Yes we want them to get a lot of things right from the comics, but the comics themselves are a mess. So what's wrong with having two trilogies? If they go together, nice. If they don't, big deal.

Re: Would you mind if X-MEN: FIRST CLASS retconned X-MEN: THE LAST STA

I think one of the problems with "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" is that at it's heart it could have been a really great action/adventure story. Strip away all the unnecessary mutant cameos and silly sub-plots and you could have had a pretty good Wolverine solo movie. I also believe that Gavin Hood didn't get the most out of Hugh Jackman. When handled by an experienced director like Christopher Nolan or Darren Aronfosky, Hugh has proven to be tremendous. This is one of the reasons why I'm looking forward to "The Wolverine". Jackman was wonderful in "The Fountain". The Last Stand in my opinion suffered from many of the same problems that Wolverine did, plus it had Zak Penn writing it. Bleh.

Re: Would you mind if X-MEN: FIRST CLASS retconned X-MEN: THE LAST STA

I don't care if they retcon or ignore completely the subpar 'X-Men: The Last Stand' or 'Wolverine,' but they could have done it all within the same continuity if they really wanted to and included most of the characters from the previous X-Men films.

If you take the Three Mile Island tower collapse in Wolverine as an alternate take on the Three Mile Island Accident in 1979 (putting Wolverine's Vietnam and Stryker's team exploits six years earlier in 1973, which fits) and work from there (assuming the X3 prologue was set at the same time), you could set 'First Class' four years later in 1983 and have the following character ages (based on the ages of the actors who played them except for Cyclops, who has to be in high school in 1979 as per his appearance in Wolverine):

Mystique - 11 (adjust up to 17/18)
Moira MacTaggert - 15 (adjust up to 26-28 to make her a
PhD)
Storm - 17
Jean Grey - 18
Cyclops - 18-22 (depends on what HS year he was in 1979)
Emma Frost - 27
Hank McCoy - 28
Professor Xavier - 43
Magneto - 44

Have Frost and McCoy be instructors/elder members of the first X-Men team with MacTaggert as a fellow instructor/scientist.

Of course, they went in a different direction, so none of that matters now, but it could have been done in the X-Men movie continuity.

Re: Would you mind if X-MEN: FIRST CLASS retconned X-MEN: THE LAST STA

It's possible that if First Class is successful and we get a sequel we will see Jean, Storm, etc, and the establishment of the X-Men we know from the films.

Re: Would you mind if X-MEN: FIRST CLASS retconned X-MEN: THE LAST STA

This is a very minor point, but I'd be sad to lose Ellen Page's Kitty Pryde.

Re: Would you mind if X-MEN: FIRST CLASS retconned X-MEN: THE LAST STA

Well if X4 ever happens, then she's probably still in. Unless they recast Kitty Pryde again, as if it was a running gag.

Re: Would you mind if X-MEN: FIRST CLASS retconned X-MEN: THE LAST STA

Yeah Ellen Page as Kitty was one of The Last Stand's few bright spots. I would love for her to return.

Re: Would you mind if X-MEN: FIRST CLASS retconned X-MEN: THE LAST STA

Yes Admiral, I think a sequel to this with a young Jean and Scott is what they are working towards. I know the title is implying to some that this will mean the firs students at Xavier's school, but I think they have taken it that these are the first mutants who step it up and establish things.

Strange as I was so crazy to get some information, but now it is the time to kind of wait and see how they do the dang movie. If this one ends on an odd note or undoes the good of the first two, then there will be a problem. Otherwise, give it a chance to establish itself already. No trailer and some folks are already complaining. ;0)

Re: Would you mind if X-MEN: FIRST CLASS retconned X-MEN: THE LAST STA

Yes I would mind. In fact whoever suggested such a thing should be given an epic wedgie right now. Unless they enjoy getting epic wedgies. Then they should be told in no uncertain terms, "You will never experience an epic wedgie again."

Re: Would you mind if X-MEN: FIRST CLASS retconned X-MEN: THE LAST STA

Would you mind if X-MEN: FIRST CLASS retconned X-MEN: THE LAST STAND?

"Wolverine" already shot the movie continuity to hell, so why not?

Re: Would you mind if X-MEN: FIRST CLASS retconned X-MEN: THE LAST STA

Is there any confirmed news about a trailer for the Super Bowl? I know there are other announced spots. What is the hold up here?

Re: Would you mind if X-MEN: FIRST CLASS retconned X-MEN: THE LAST STA

There will be no "X-Men: First Class" trailer for the Super Bowl. Only "Captain America: First Avenger" "Green Lantern" and "Thor" comic book movie wise, unless Fox is meaning to surprise everyone but i doubt that. Was kind of disappointed there was no trailer.

That's how I feel. You don't just ignore an installment because you don't like it. That's bad storytelling and I'm surprised that so many people are okay with the idea.

Re: Would you mind if X-MEN: FIRST CLASS retconned X-MEN: THE LAST STA

Well, in all fairness, Bryan Singer didn't direct X-Men: The Last Stand or X-Men Origins: Wolverine so he might not feel beholden to those movies. And honestly, if they were any good, I would have a problem with it, but because both of them sucked, I honestly don't care if Singer chooses to ignore certain plot and/or character elements. So long as he makes (or is involved in making) a good movie.

Re: Would you mind if X-MEN: FIRST CLASS retconned X-MEN: THE LAST STA

^ He certainly had no problem ignoring Superman III & IV when it suited him!

My thinking is that a good movie should be able to cleverly incorporate weak elements from a previous installment and make them work rather than ignore them. Maybe it's not always possible, I don't know, but I think that's the best way to tackle the issue. The alternative not only damages a series' integrity, but strikes me as lazy.

He certainly had no problem ignoring Superman III & IV when it suited him!
He'd be perfect for the Highlander franchise then. And was he involved with Dallas by any chance? ;)

Seriously though, I like that he refered to Superman Returns as a film that uses the first two Christopher Reeve movies as a vague backstory as opposed to a sequel that ignores III and IV. It's easier to digest than the idea that it's real retcon.

Re: Would you mind if X-MEN: FIRST CLASS retconned X-MEN: THE LAST STA

Xavier has essence transfer.

How awesome is that?
