Titan

Does anyone know when we will be getting the next titan novel ... I know it has featured in the typhon pacl and the destiny trilogy amongst others however its beeen a while since we have seen a titan stand alone book :)

There have been two standalone Titan novels between Destiny and Typhon Pact: Over a Torrent Sea by me in February 2009 and Synthesis by James Swallow in November 2009. As for Seize the Fire, despite its Typhon Pact branding, it is a full-fledged, self-contained Titan novel. As for what comes after it, nothing has been announced yet.

I have both Over a Torrent Sea and Synthesis, they are some of the best trek lit and i think they are both worthy of film scripts or at least straight to DVD releases. If someone came to you and said they would like you to write a screenplay for "Over a Torrent Sea" is that something you would consider doing ?

Im suprised nothing has been announced for a new Titan novel though ... How far ahead do pocket plan them i guess it must be a few years ....

have read only the first book liked it . plan to read more when I get back to it . Just finished death in winter . now reading articles of the federation liking it so far. looks like I will have to back track a little genisis series and a time to series then resistance . already read death before dishonor out of order.

I think that overstates their quality and the quality of the Titan series as a whole, in my opinion. I'm not sure about the sales figures for the Titan books, but my general feeling is that they're not the best received series in Treklit at this time. I personally would rather see more emphasis on Vanguard.

A Little of topic but Articles of the Federation is not only one of the best trek books i have ever read but some of the best fiction i have ever read. It was the west wing in space .... It could easilly be a west wing spin off. If your just on the time to series u have a long way too goo lol. You may want to read them b4 AOTF beacuse the events take place after the last a time to novel

I agree Vanguard is a very good set of novels but they would have to go back to the TOS era to start telling those stories. I think that experiment failed with Enterprise. Although a stand alone DVD would never hurt

On behalf of myself and James Swallow, thank you.

That is something that would never happen, so there's no point in considering it. The makers of ST movies would rather develop their own stories than adapt tie-in novels. Besides, it would require an Avatar-level budget to do it justice, and there's no way Paramount would fork that out for a Titan movie.

The Pocket schedule is generally worked out a year at a time. And generally the only editorial "plan" for TTN has been "let's hire an author to come up with a new TTN story." It's always been approached as an episodic, make-it-up-as-you-go kind of series rather than something that has a preplanned arc like Vanguard kinda does.

I understand that CBS and Paramount wont be to quick to put a hefty budget into a Titan production however if it went straight to dvd surely that would aliviate some of the production costs. I just think its a shame that Star trek lit has told some amazing stories over the years

"Orions Hounds" and "Over a Torrent Sea" by yourslelf
"Articals of the Federation" by KRAD
Any number of the New Frontier and Vanguard Series
And the Destiny Trilogy by David Mack

There are loads more to add to that list that i cant think of at this time of morning. BSG are managing to do very good direct to DVD releases so surely paramount could do the same. It seems a waste to ditch the 24th centuary ...

I don't think you'll see much of the 24th century in film or TV form any more. After the success of the latest film, I' would guess that's what they'll be concentrating on from here on out (or at least until the next inevitable reboot). I would say you'll probably have to rely on the books for your 24th century fix for a while.

There are a lot of good stories in Treklit and I think that's just where they're going to stay. It'd be pretty precedent breaking to have the tail wag the dog. Tie-in products don't usually apply to the mainline product.

I understand what your saying however surely from a buisness point of view , surely it is easy money to be made.

Take something like the first 4 new frontier books and releasing it on dvd / blu ray. Not only would all of us go buy it , but the new generation of fans that the new film has brought to the fold would also buy it beacuse it has the star trek brand. If it works they could make more , if it doesnt then they wont have lost much ...

The problem is, it's not easy money to be made or they would have done it. They haven't been able to make money with the Star Trek name since 1996 when First Contact came out until the most recent movie hit.

So, from a business perspective for them to change from their most recent, MOST successful Star Trek movie ever back to the universe/century/storyline where they were hemmorhaging money for years would be a very bad call. People who liked what they saw in Trek XI want more of that, not a return to a Trek set in the 24th century that is in a lot of ways inaccessible to the general audience the studio has just reined in with their newest movie.

Nah, you can't say that. World isn't perfect. A lot of projects done that are total failures and a waste, and a lot of projects never ever realized that would have been big hits.

That is my hope is well, surely it is worth a try

Yeah, I'm sure there are projects that would have been hits that maybe weren't noticed or picked up or whatever - but the point remains - the 24th century Star Trek is effectively dead at this point because it hasn't been successful (meaning profitable) since 1996. That's 15 years ago. Now they have a movie that was a huge success. The biggest Trek has ever had. They aren't going to stray from that for quite some time.

Works fine for me. (That, and the three television series and four movies.) I've always enjoyed the fact that you can do more with novels, since you're not limited by an SFX budget. Plus, the "relaunch" path the books have taken has been great, simply because the authors have a lot more leeway, which lets them tell even more incredible stories.

As for the Titan series, Synthesis has been my favorite so far. (No offense, Christopher!)

I would never wont them to devaite from the novels canon as i have invested far to much time into that. I guess that would be another problem for paramount as well if they were to consider doing anything ...

Paramount would never consider it. They only have the rights to make Trek movies anymore, and they've invested heavily in the J. J. Abrams version of ST, which proved highly successful for them. That's where their focus is obviously going to remain.

As for CBS, which owns the franchise overall and would be responsible for any television project, they could theoretically choose to return to the 24th century, though it seems more likely that they'd try to tie into the successful Abramsverse or perhaps follow its lead and create yet another separate, fresh-start continuity of their own. But no matter what they did, don't delude yourself by imagining for a millisecond that they'd choose to follow the novel continuity. They'd barely even be aware of the novels. The novels are a tiny, tiny sidebar of the franchise. Their readership is in the tens of thousands, maybe. By contrast, Star Trek Online has millions of subscribers. If a new Trek show or movie were to draw on any tie-in continuity, it would be STO.

That would actually be pretty cool. Michael A. Martin's The Needs of the Many was fantastic, and since it referenced the game, novel, film, and alternate realities, all wrapped up within the STO universe, it could work incredibly well for newcomers and old-school fans.
