Why is this the pic on wiki?!

Looked up Starship on wiki. What is the first picture? The Enterprise refit. While an honor to have the 'Ol gal the first thing on the page, I ask myself.... Couldn't they at least get a decent picture? What the hell is this?!

A picture that inspires a little awe and majesty would be nice. This cereal box cut out, while an ok piece of art on it's own, is not the image I'd want to have associated with starships. In the end it's no biggie but anyone here me?

Don't wanna. Just wanted to point it out. I figured the 1st response would be smarmy...

^ So change it then, numbnuts. What're you complaining to us for?

That just earned you an infraction. Comments to PM.

And the rest of you need to stop spamming up this thread. Either discuss the issue TJ posted about or don't bother posting here. (And if any of you felt that this post was spam, you should have used the "Notify Moderator" button rather then bitching about it in the thread.)

I don't know enough about copyright law to say for sure, but someone may have been worried that posting an actual screenshot from a movie or film might constitute a copyright infringement. While that may technically true, however, people use screenshots when they post news, reviews, etc of cinematic works and they don't seem to get sued left and right. Another forum that I frequent, a James Bond forum, doesn't allow ANY MGM copyrighted work posted in threads which includes any and all movie screenshots or publicity stills, due to muck-raking from MGM. I would think, though, that Wikipedia, being a non-profit encyclopedia, might be exempt under fair use laws (as opposed to a forum that makes money off ads).

Anyway, my vote is that we take this opportunity to have a fun contest - have our creative members here submit their user-created artistic interpretations of our favorite starship, have a vote, and then someone uploads the winning item as the Wiki picture.

Of course, that won't matter because someone could just change it to whatever they want :) That doesn't detract from the fun though!

One thing of note. I thought the picture would be a small screen shot. (there is no picture here) So I went to Wiki and enlarged the picture. Typical of wikipedia, the image is entitled USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A but the image is weird. I think it is either a model or CGI FX6-1995-A.
Someone was REALLY trying to avoid copyright laws. But I agree, a simple Screen cap could have been used (unless wiki has rules against that).

A screen cap generally can't be used unless the article in question is about a specific movie, character (or, in this case, ship), episode, etc. The above image is probably one of those publicly-displayed ship models in Riverside, Iowa, Vulcan, Canada, or something similar.

This public-domain image of the TOS model in the Smithsonian would be a good substitute - but since my Wiki username is my real name, now that I've written this here, I'd rather not make the change myself. I know, I'm being silly, but there you go. :p

Yeah, in it's Vulcan, Canada. I'd be happy to replace the photo but I haven't got a clue where to start.

We can edit text on wiki. Can pictures get the same treatment?
