What did you learn today?

I learned that The Cat Came Back, that silly children’s song we all sang when we were kids, was in fact originally written in the 1890s in minstrel dialect.

I have never heard of this song.

Then you need to watch this (from the National Film Board of Canada):

Awww! I have a very clear memory of being 5 years old and sitting on the rug watching that, and being pleasantly interrupted by my dad bringing me a slice of his freshly baked banana bread.

I also learned that pity party threads in both Misc and the Forum That Dares Not Speak Its Name don't go well.

And for some reason I'm now hankering for pita. With either hummus or falafel, but preferably both.

In other words, Shatnertage, you want to start your own pita party?

^ :rommie:

I learned that the exact amount I need to pay back to the county is £351.26. The morons in the family centre office forgot to let the county (our employer) know that my last day at work was December 8th so I was paid for the entire month of December. I don't begrudge repaying what is not rightfully mine, but the incompetence of the office staff bugs the hell out of me, especially as I had to call them twice to get them to send the correct paperwork to payroll.

I learned that I'm either doing something wrong when I make real mac and cheese (rather than mac in a box), or that something in there just doesn't agree with me. :(

Do you have a recipe that you're following? Are you baking it?

In the flag thread today I learned that there is or was a movement to unite Australia and New Zealand. It seems unlikely at this point.

Like millions of other American kids, I grew up with the long-running TV program Captain Kangaroo. I just learned that the Captain’s familiar theme music wasn’t written specifically for the show. It’s a piece called “Puffin’ Billy” by English composer Edward White.

And no, it has nothing to do with drugs.

I also learned that the singer-songwriter Jennifer Warnes, aka Jennifer Warren, aka Jennifer (no last name) and the actress Jennifer Warren are two completely different people.

That people think that when they say random drug and alcohol tests at work that it is really random and they only do the test when you are acting normal and are not drunk and stoned.. LOL that is when the test are done people the watch look and listen if your high yep it is random drug test time... LOL

Today I learned that my landlord can jack up my rent 10%, but I don't have to pay it until they provide me 30 day notice in writing, which they have not. Take your 4 day telephone notice and Suck it, you're not getting an extra $120 out of me this month! Bwahahahahahhaha!

I learned that the wheels on a Cub Scout Pinewood Derby car are a pain in the ass to get nailed in evenly.

Did you also learn that it's super annoying if you go over the maximum weight? You'll spend the first hour of the derby drilling holes into your car just to make it lighter so it actually qualifies for the race.
