Lethal Weapon reboot in the works

EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros and producer Joel Silver have set Will Beall to write Lethal Weapon, with a take that will relaunch the buddy cop series with a new cast. Beall, a former LA police officer who patrolled South Central and wrote the novel L.A. Rex, has seen his stock rise at the studio because of his script Gangster Squad, the period crime drama about an elite crime squad that fought against organized crime kingpins like Mickey Cohen. Zombieland helmer Ruben Fleischer has come aboard to direct that film.

They were huge movies and it makes sense to do more and with Mel Gibson's troubles a remake is pretty inevitable. Still it would just be weird to see a Lethal Weapon movie sans Gibson and Glover.

This is just such a horrible idea.

The sad thing is, apparently LW scribe Shane Black wrote a script for a LW5, the first one he had written since the original. This would have featured Riggs & Murtagh but also Murtagh's son and a new generation of cops. Thus you could have had a sort of reboot, Lethal Weapon The Next Generation or whatever, while not ignoring the original. But Mad Mel didn't want to do it.

There's plenty of scope for a buddy-buddy cop movie in the vein of Lethal Weapon but I don't know why they're going to remake the original.

Pointless, Lethal Weapon isn't an especially unique story, what made it special was Gibson and Glover.

Like you say, just make AN other buddy cop film!

I have to say I am pretty sceptical. As Starkers pointed out, it's the chemistry between Gibson and Glover which really make those movies great.

Still, If I had to recast off the top of my head I think Ryan Reynolds could make a pretty good Riggs. Not sure who they'd get for Murtagh though.

^ Ugh. I like Reynolds plenty but not for Riggs. I'd want the dangerous, borderline psycho from the first movie, not the clown with a gun from the later ones. Someone like Jeremy Renner, maybe.

I dunno, I thought he was pretty edgy in Smokin' Aces. I think he could pull it off.

Why remake an existing, classic buddy cop film, when it's just as easy to create a whole new set of characters with the same formula? It's not like LW was the first-ever and only-ever buddy cop film made. There were plenty before and since.

^ Haven't seen it, so maybe you're right. I just associate him with wisecracks and sarcasm. Which is fine and dandy but I liked it when Riggs was edgier.

They could replace Danny Glover with Donald Glover! Just think how many people you'll fool with the poster!

Just fuck them and everyone who's going to be involved in it, and everyone who's going to watch it.

So, when are they going to reboot Back to the Future, Indiana Jones and Die Hard?

It's a sad state in the movie industry that we even have to think about rebooting old movies.

Are we so bereft of new ideas?

Around the same time they reboot Jaws.

And if that ever happens, I'm putting together a posse to go and burn Hollywood to the fucking ground.

Back to the Future is already in the planning stages, supposedly. I think it's a horrible idea, as is Lethal Weapon. As was Nightmare on Elm Street.

BTTF is where I draw the line of pointless retarded "reboots". I've dreaded the day forever, and yet with how pathetic Hollywood is these days, it's not a question of if, but unfortunately when.

And what ever happened to the good old days when Hollywood just told it like it was and just admitted it was a remake, instead of creating the whole "reboot" buzzword craze? Every time I hear the word reboot, I want to kill a puppy.

I don't want to seem melodramatic, but if they ever remake Die Hard, it will portent the coming apocalypse and the end of civilisation as we know it.

On topic, given what passes for creativity in Hollywood these days, what's the odds they decide to be rilly, rilly clever and make the Riggs character black and the Murtagh one white? Like, rilly radically reinterpreting LW, y'know? Liam Neeson for Murtagh maybe?!

Or make them women!

Alfre Woodard as Murtagh, and Linsey Lohan as Riggs! She's already got the crazy bit down!
