Anybody Here Ever Work For Home Depot?

If so, what is the deal with the computer salespeople being obsessed with McAfee products? I've told these guys I don't like the brand but all their computers are loaded with it. They get all bent out of shape and start showing me stats when I say I'm going to uninstall it.

Of course there's a tie-in, but the leaning on the customer is outrageous. Can't find answers on Google.

Any insider information?

EDIT: I had a brain cramp - meant to write Office Depot. :ack:

I didn't even know they HAD computer sales at Home Depot.

And I live in Atlanta, the home base of the entire company.

I'm confused though - Are you talking to these guys in the capacity of customer? Consultant? New co-worker? I mean, it would sort of make a difference, in terms of why they are singing the praises of McAfee....

^I got a sweet deal on a back-up laptop. (Toshiba.) Already having problems with anti-virus. Can NOT get these guys to shut up about McAfee. Only bought laptop last week so they have to put up with me for free.

Do you mean Office Depot, Lady Eve? Because there is a corporate tie in with McAfee and Office Depot (link).

^ That's what I'm guessing. Because although I admittedly don't spend much time in Home Depot...I was really surprised to learn of this new home computer department.... Just doesn't seem to fit in with plywood, kitchen cabinets, lawnmowers and lighting fixtures.

Oh dear God, of course I meant Office Depot. :alienblush: Gah. Sorry about that. *smites self* Thanks, John. I'm still wondering about what employees are told even if their customers totally hate the product. One guy slipped and said he used Norton at home, then caught himself, blushed and said, "Well, er, that's just because I'm used to it."

Okay. So that clears that up!

Man, I was beginning to think I was even more oblivious than usual the last time I was in there to buy toilet parts.

And I think J. Allen gave you your answer, too. Which is about what I expected. Most computer brands and computer stores have all kinds of corporate you-scratch-my-back-I'll-scratch-yours ties. ;)

Well, at one time, Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse sold electronics like TVs, computers and such, so I just wanted to be sure.

No worries. We've all done it.

I suspect the sales people have been ordered to push the McAfee product. I also suspect that many of them consider themselves computer gurus and therefore hate being told what products to push, which might explain their testiness concerning the subject...although directing that testiness at the customer doesn't really make much sense, does it. :wtf:

One of the reasons (not the reason, but one of them) I buy just about all my computer equipment online is so I don't have to listen to some sales clerk's boss-mandated pitch about extended warranties.
