NFL Talk - 2010-11 Season

Jets baby!

I had a bet with my boss on the Jets game. He now has to wear an I heart Jets button for the next year.

I'm loving this year.

Ryan talks a lot of shit, granted, but ... thus far, he's backing it up.

For some, that's doubly infuriating.

I spent $330 and spent all afternoon standing in the cold to watch that shit?!?!?

FUCK!

A couple guys from NJ drove up and were sitting in front of us, rooting for the Jets. Real nice guys, though I swear during the second half I could have killed them with my bare hands.

So the Bears and the Packers are playing for the right to lose to the Patriots? :)

Oh yeah? :D

Brilliant game by the Jets, very smart, very exciting.

The hate for the Pats pretty much comes from the fact that they are consistently better than everyone else, and very much have a, "Fuck you, we're going to play the game we want to play it" attitude.

I've hated the Patriots since before I really even got interested in American Football, simply for their idiotic team name; especially with their win in the post 9/11 Super Bowl and all the cheesiness around that. Then I later found out my hate was justified because they really are shit. ;)

I was wondering how you handled that yesterday. Were you one of the fans that left early or did you stay to the bitter end as I did last week in KC? (BTW if you left early, I'm NOT judging.)

Now you know a little how I felt last week, the big difference being your team is actually good and probably 9 times out of 10, win that game. Pats just had a bad game, that's all there is to it.

I walked out after the 2nd failed onside kick. Didn't want to see the Jets in the victory formation at Gillette.

How was it to watch on TV as far as the Jets contingent went? They were loud, especially as the game went on. It had to be 1/3 Jets fans.

I really want to go to the Dreadowlands next year and return the favor.

To be fair, the 9/11 connection wasn't their fault. They never really played it up. That was just the sports media. I rooted for them in 2001, but I stopped after that. I'm not a fan of dynasties.

Anyway, I have trouble taking Ryan seriously, so what he says doesn't bother me. Especially since he's been able to back it up. Plus, he's Buddy Ryan's son. Right now, that's the only connection I have left.

Well... I tend to think he's finally backing it up. A subtle distinction perhaps, but to me an important one.

What's so idiotic about the nickname? Yeah that whole bit around the season around 9/11 seems almost Hollywood-esque, but still ... it was badly needed then and the nickname makes sense given that the team is based in New England.

Don't sell the Chefs ... I mean the Chiefs, short. They only real offense was that they are very young. They have an excellent running game and what appears to be a very good defense. A little more seasoning and perhaps a good addition of veteran leadership, and I be they will be back in the thick of it soon

Yeah, maybe "idiotic" was too strong, but that's just how I felt at the time; it sounded really fucking weird to me to name a team like that and knowing nothing about the sport that's one the things that determined whether I was going to like a team or not. ;)

How is that weird? If anything, it's appropriate. Boston was a hotbed of the American Revolution, you know, patriots vs. loyalists.

Just like Steelers works in Pittsburgh, Vikings in Minnesota, Ravens in Baltimore, Cowboys in Dallas, etc.

Much less arbitrary than say, the Bengals or Chargers, or Rams.

I like when the name has a connection with the city.

I don't know how to explain it, but I think this whole "patriot" thing is very American. Nobody calls himself a patriot where I'm from, and for me being very leftist it's almost an insult. So while there are lots of funny names in the NFL (what exactly is a "brown"? ;)) that kind of stuck out to me.

You can pretty much guess how I, as a Yankees (and Mets) fan, would feel about the Patriots. ;) Go Jets!

(I have nothing against the Pats' name, though. It's entirely understandable - Boston was always hardcore revolutionary. That's the whole reason for the Boston/New York rivalry, as New York was largely Loyalist back in the day.)

No it's not. The Revolutionary war has very little to do with a Boston-New York rivalry. It has to do with the Red Sox and Yankees being competitive against each other year in and year out. It also has to do with there being no major cities between the two that had sports teams in order to develop rivalries.

I'm not even sure it's factually accurate to say that New York was loyalist. New York was occupied, but I don't think there is much evidence it was significantly loyalist. Certainly, as a merchant city, they had the same financial interests as the smugglers in Boston did.

But the name Patriots does make sense for New England. It was the birthplace of the American Revolution and the name Patriot was used by the revolutionaries. They aren't trying to claim that New Englanders are more patriotic, just recognize specifically those that started the American Revolution.

Really....hmm. I always thought the two cities were pretty much always at loggerheads, even before the Red Sox-Yankees thing. Oh well, I have nothing personal against Boston at any rate, I quite liked it when I visited the place.

Well, very few Americans would be insulted by earnestly being called a patriot but it's kind of a vague notion. Everyone in their own mind believes what they believe in is best for the country. I'm sure both Nancy Pelosi and John Boehner would consider themselves to be patriots.

Sporting events in America though really like to play this all up, they always start with the National Anthem where everyone stands (with troops in uniform holding the flag and for special occasions jets flying overhead or fireworks) and are big on showcasing community outreach programs and supporting the troops. Add into that how the NFL likes to show how much a Patriots win means for the country after 9/11 or New Orleans winning means to those who suffered Hurricane Katrina and it can get a bit overblown.

Go Jets! Not that I care about the Jets, I just don't want Pittsburgh in the Super Bowl.

So would you be more insulted if I called you a patriot or if I called you a pedophile and rapist? Of course, depending on how far left you are, you may think pedophiles and rapists are victims too. :p

Of course, calling you a Detroit Lions fan might be the ultimate insult. :)

Oh my, I should've known where this would lead. I understand the difference between the original meaning of "patriot" in US history and the common usage of the expression today; and while few people where I'm from "openly" identify as patriots, surely my opinion is fringe insofar as I don't think my country is any better than any other (in fact I think it's shit). If there were a football club called "San Francisco Proletarians" I'm sure it would be disliked for political reasons by many people too, even if the name has a very reasonable non-political explanation. And that's the last thing I'll say about this,

Not quite. The Jets bullied them into that "bad game," whether Pats fans want to admit it or not.

And, actually, three of the last five times, the Jets have won "that game." :guffaw:

Well... I tend to think he's finally backing it up. A subtle distinction perhaps, but to me an important one.

The man's reached two AFC championships in his first two seasons. When exactly was he not backing it up?
