Why Bring Back Rose Tyler?

"Dwight, you ignorant slut!" ~Michael Scott, The Office

"Slut" is not a slur against women. A man can be a slut, too. "Slut" is simply an inaccurate description of Rose. She dated Mickey, and then she left and ran off with the Doctor. It makes her a shitty girlfriend, but she's hardly a slut.

I don't know, apparently Anthony Hopkins likes to eat people and Rock Hudson was straight...

Despite what he says, everyone knows that Leonard Nimory is Spock.

Again. I don't give a damn if Rose Tyler is a fictional character or not. Or if you like her or not. It's not necessary to call her an obnoxious slut and I felt offended by Omaha Star using that term.

Curious. Why is "slut" so much worse than "bitch" which is being flung around too?

Assuming equal levels of factual inaccuracy, of course.

Good question. Both words for some reason have become acceptable to use in our society to describe women in a derogatory light. "Bitch" in this case for someone who is angry or less agreeable I guess. Just as a man is described as an ass for less than acceptable behavior.

Well I guess bitch is like bastard, in that it can almost be used as a compliment, or by people to describe themselves in an empowering way. Slut doesn't have a lot of positive connotations usually, and it is usually addressed towards women rather than men. I've never heard Bond called a slut, but lets be honest if he were a women that's what M would call him! er...her!

It's not necessary to call her an obnoxious slut and I felt offended by Omaha Star using that term. I guess that's okay language to use though...and no one still has provided any shred of evidence to suggest otherwise to me. "It's a fictional character" just reeks of ignorance...and as for being on a soapbox...I guess you don't have a woman in your life Josan if you think it's okay to use derogatory terms in that manner. If you did then maybe you'd understand why this is offense. It's called having respect.

My girlfriend and I have been together for several years. Feeble try. And again, get off your soapbox. There's nothing misogynistic about calling a woman a slut. Calling all women sluts, yes. Calling one woman a slut, no. Maybe you need to refresh yourself on the word's definition.

Fair enough but then again try to give some examples of Rose being a slut please instead of repeatedly telling me to get off my soapbox. Did she cheat on Mickey? No. Did she have relations with other men during her relationship with Mickey? No (or at least not anything we know about). Is she a slut for having feelings for the Doctor? No. Is Rose obnoxious? Sure I'll grant that. Is Rose naive? I'll grant that as well. I'll repeat again...I don't care if people like her or not but calling her a slut is not warranted and I really don't think I'm preaching...if I was on a soapbox I would preach about something more worth while.

Why not bring back Rose Tyler?

DW with Rose trumps DW without. Check, please. :techman:

It was also a reunion episode. They threw in everybody. It would have been illogical not to have Rose. I thought it was nice to see her. She grew into the role as a strong character. People just don't like the romantic subplot they gave her with the Doctor, so they direct all the anger in the world at her.

Why are we forgetting about Adam? Rose is with Mickey and runs off with another man (issue one). While she's with Mickey and other man, she gets with Adam, who joins the Tardis crew temporarily. He's every bit as stupid as she is and the Doctor sends him packing.

Does Rose hop on every lap she sees? No. But not for lack of trying.

Mickey, Adam, the Doctor, Captain Jack, is there anyone she didn't try to hook up with? Is there some reason Cassandra remembers growing up as a boy? Hmmm ...

At worst Rose is a bit of a tart (in a flirtatious sense), though probably not as much of a tart as Amy

But slut? It's not like Rose was in Torchwood here!

She's not a slut.

If you want to call her obnoxious then fair enough but I don't see any need for throwing around words like slut & bitch about a character who at the end of the day was always written & portrayed as a fairly ordinary (if somewhat selfish) girl.

Completely unnecessary.

Why are we forgetting about Adam? Rose is with Mickey and runs off with another man (issue one).

You mean, Mickey, the guy who reacted to her almost dying by ignoring it and going down to the pub for a drink and a football match? Mickey, the guy who told Rose not to read his emails? (Hell, RTD himself said in The Writer's Tale that the intent there was that Mickey was cheating on Rose.)

Rose dumped him. That does not mean she is promiscuous.

While she's with Mickey and other man, she gets with Adam,

She was no longer with Mickey, and she was not seeing the Doctor. And she did not "get with" Adam -- she flirted with him a bit and then it didn't go anywhere. Are you going to claim that anyone who goes on a single date with somebody is necessarily seeing them, too?

Does Rose hop on every lap she sees? No. But not for lack of trying.

Oh please. Rose shows attraction to exactly four people in the whole of Doctor Who: Mickey, Adam, Jack, and the Doctor. She broke up with Mickey at the end of "Rose," and it never went beyond flirtation with Adam and Jack. And then she waited a very, very long time before admitting her deeper feelings for the Doctor. It's completely disingenuous to say she tried to hop on every lap she saw.

Mickey, Adam, the Doctor, Captain Jack, is there anyone she didn't try to hook up with?

I don't recall her hitting on anyone throughout the entirety of Series Two, and I don't recall her actually entering a relationship with anyone between "Rose" and "Journey's End."

To call a woman who engages in simple flirtation -- which is all Rose ever did with Adam and Jack -- a slut is pure misogyny.

There's that word again. I do not think you understand what it actually means. But nice try.

FYI, it literally means a hatred of all women. How is a dislike of one very specific individual in any way representative of the entire group? You're attempting to label me someone who hates half of the planet. If that's truly what you think, then you obviously have not been paying attention. Maybe you should educate yourself before you stick your foot even further in your mouth.

For the same reason it's racist if you use the n-word against one specific black man but not all black men. It's a slur against women, used solely because she is a woman.

I think it's about time you dialed it back. You are attacking me directly, not talking about posts. You have called me a "hater of all women" which is blatantly untrue, and it's getting old. And all because of a fictional television character with questionable morals. You might want to take a hard long look in the mirror.

Well, I just think it's really silly to white knight about one over the top poster calling her "slut" and completely ignore the multiple "bitch" comments when both are undeserved. I guess the "bitch" characterization can at least be defended...

I've never heard Bond called a slut, but lets be honest if he were a women that's what M would call him! er...her!

FWIW, Bond is a total slut. :p

That's still one of the weakest arguments (the emails) for cheating evidence I've ever heard and RTD utterly, utterly failed to communicate that. I'm all about authorial intent, but in this case there's just no way I can agree with that interpretation.

And it's generally on the breaker to inform the breakee.

I don't remember Rose flirting with Adam, I'll have to rewatch those eps, I remember it being purely platonic, and the Doctor inviting Adam along to distract Rose's passion away from himself. Obviously that didn't work, because Adam was a very manly man (Mickey, Rory and Jack are all far more manly, IMHO)
