Fun little phone got it because it was time to upgrade and thought I needed to get with it and get a smartphone as texting on a numerical keypad is like sticking your balls in a metal drawer.

I'm on my parent's plan but now I'm going to owe them $15 a month for the internet on the thing that I'll more-than-likely rarely use.

Oh, and because I'm a big nerd I downloaded the sound of the CTU phone and made it my ringtone.

Not sure what it's like where you live, but you should be able to find plenty of free internet hotspots around town, like in coffee shops. Very handy to be able to check email regularly even if you can't be bothered web-surfing.

Phone internet's awesome... when it works. My cheapo Samsung phone has been useless most of today. The words "Request Timeout" have been permanently burned into my brain, and I missed out on a couple of books I wanted on eBay 'coz I couldn't log in to rebid.

Most days it's fine, though. Having to be at a computer to use the internet seems so antiquated nowadays:lol:.

I don't think Blackberry's are worth the extra money over a regular smartphone.

So, I'm not clear on how this whole thing.... works and how I am charged. Like, my phone I noticed this evening told me I had Facebook messages. So I'm wondering if I'm charged for this connection? Is it an "always on" connection? Can it just be on when I'm trying to surf? How does new technology work?!

If your Blackberry is WiFi capable, it should be using your wireless home network while in range (assuming you have a wifi network and have configured your Blackberry to use it) If you are not at home it will use the cell phone data plan that you signed up for.

No WiFi at home. My question is more of what that plan entails. Without checking I'm not sure, exactly, what my data plan is. But let's go with this situation.

I'm out walking around, my phone is set to use the carrier's data network. Am I being charged a rate for the phone just sitting in my pocket not doing anything on the internet? Or is my plan covering that?

Someone posts something on my FB page, my phone updates to tell me that. Am I charged?

I presume I'm charged no matter what if I surf the net on it.

But I'm sort of paranoid right now about how I'm charged with this silly ass thing to the point that I've turned off the internet on it for now. As when I saw it let me know I had Facebook messages an alarm went off in my head that some communicating is going on between the phone and the internet for it to know this and I wondered if I was being charged for that even though I actively didn't do anything.

I don't know about your carrier, but my carrier (Telus, in Canada) requires you to sign up for a data plan when buying a smartphone. I'm assuming that your carrier is the same and that your parents added you to their existing data plan.

Getting updates from facebook or other internet usage should not be costing you anything more than you are already being charged.

I would check with your parents as to the specific details of their plan, but updates and light website usage should not be a problem.

Well, I mean on my limits or what-not. It's not like I've got a nice long form telling me on what I can or cannot do.

Like I mentioned earlier. If you are sharing your parents internet plan, then your best bet is to check with them. Who is your provider, and what kind of Blackberry do you have?

T-Mobile it's a Blackberry Bold 9780.

It's my parents' plan but my internet addition. I'll probably just call the guy who sold it to me and get a clearer understanding of what my plan entails.

Yeah, best to contact TMobile. My guess however is that they would have required you to sign up for a data plan when buying a smartphone. Providers charging per usage, or per webpage is usually reserved for WAP phones (Non smartphone style web browsing that has been available for years)

Even their smallest data plan should be more than enough for random and lite internet usage.

I may be lacking those particular anatomical bits but I certainly agree with the sentiment. I'm one of those anal retentive losers who types texts out in complete sentences, which was a nightmare on numerical keypads. Also my previous two phones didn't have apostrophes, which drove the grammar Nazi in me futher around the bend. I got my Blackberry "free" when I switched from pay-as-you-go to a contract a few months ago. It's the basic model but I enjoy it, though I rarely use it for the 'net as my eyesight's crap and I hate having to scroll all over the page when it's magnified. But, man, do I love the QWERTY keyboard! And it has an apostrophe! ;)

Guess what the surgeons in the local Cardio-Thoracic Unit were fond of using as their ringtone back when 24 was popular...?

They also used to answer their phones with "CTU" followed by their surname too. Morons.

Re: your data plan/charges - you just gotta ask your network provider for the details. They all differ a bit in what is and is not included.
