"OFF THE MAP" on ABC

Worf2DS9

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Anyone checking out this new series on ABC next week? It's about doctors in the jungle, but I could care less about that at this point. I'll be tuning in initially to see Caroline Dhavernas. Loved her in "Wonderfalls" and it'll be great to see her on TV again!

I saw a couple ads for it over the holidays, and thought it looked pretty terrible. Looked like a pretty good fit for the old "IN SPACE!" trope, for a medical show.

I'll check it out but I don't have high hopes. Maybe they chose for some reason to put all the corniest lines in the promos, and the rest of the show is actually better. Please?

Well, did anyone watch it?

I tuned in and thought it was okay. Of course, I mainly tuned in for Caroline Dhavernas, and it was great to see her on my television again -- I still miss you, Wonderfalls!. (During the broadcast, she even re-tweeted one of my tweets that complimented her in one particular scene) :D

And while fellow Canadian Rachelle Lefevre made a blink-and-you'll-miss-her appearance at the beginning, her return was quite welcome at the end. So between her, Dhavernas, and the Hawaiian scenery (which looked glorious in HD), that's enough to bring me back next week.

I had no desire to catch this show at all. The promos did absolutely anything to make me want to watch it.

How is it that a writer does not know the difference between "I could care less" and "I could not care less?"

And it's yet another doctor show from the same talentless hack who thrust Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice on the world, so no, I shall not be tuning in.

I was going to check it out until I saw it was from the makers of Grey's Anatomy. The premise sounds interesting, but it sounds like they're taking the wrong approach. Something sounds off about it which I can't quite pinpoint. Maybe it's that they all seem to act no differently than they would in a city hospital, less about the environment and more about the character's squabbles, rather than what should be the other way around in something like this. Kind of what I fear what a MASH remake would look like, in being too polished and not rough enough around the edges. Something like this needs more risk rather than tried and true.

So this is in the same universe as greys Anatomy?

(If you excuse the fact that Jason George already did it with the Nazi.)

When this show fails, it's crap, Caroline can wander over to Greys or Private Practice and be toyed with by a vicious bastard room of evil writers?

(the actress who played Muhundrah, Tracie Thoms (wonderful in Rent!) from Wonderfalls making out with Lee Pace, is playing the X-Wife to Chi McBrides imposing ex cop character who used to be the PI buddy to Lee Pace on Pushing Daisies... What the hell ever happened to Lee Pace?)

They were trying too hard to have a medical supernova on day one... I suppose a show has to be about "something happening" I mean seriously, a show about "nothing" wouldn't make any money at all for anyone.

Why is Martin Henderson pretending to be an American still?

I was debating watching the pilot, but upon learning this it's not happening. I had no clue it was from the makers of those two awful shows

Thank god, we'll finally be getting a TV medical drama! Now if only we could get a show about police officers, I could die a happy man...

There's a mantra you need to hum.

Caroline is back, Caroline is back, Caroline is back.

As lone as you keep that running in a loop you should be able to survive anything else/nextshe foolishly enters into... Apparently Caroline can, I heard, act in French too.

My one perfect dream is that she is cast as Carol Danvers in the Avengers movie. Who cares if no one has the body to be Ms. Marvel, just the tag Carol Danvers as herself (well, almost) in the opening credits would be a supreme nerd moment fangasm.

Merideth in Greys is having trouble conceiving a baby with McDreamy, so isn't it lucky that his ex wife, the red headed diva starring over on/in Private Practice is a fertility specialist (Actually that's Naomi, but their office is like a baby factory)... So that's the twofer coming up in the 3rd quarter of this season... How is that trite little coincidence going to become embroiled somehow in "Jungle Medicine"?

I'd rather see Norm and Cliff from Cheers crossover.

I wonder if they could have gotten away with calling Michael Mckean (the accidentee they had to save in the pilot) any of the many rolls he's had in the last 40 years on tv and movies?

Perry White?

David St Hubbins?

Morris Fletcher?

Gibby Fiske?

Lenny Kosnoski?

Fuck me, an unlicensed Happy Days crossover in their Pilot would have been legendary.

My daughter watched it and said it was like a terrible cross between Greys and Lost.

Surely, someone needs to make more of them to satisfy your craving...

You know, I don't mean to give them ideas, but I'm surprised they haven't tried their hand at combining the two. Like say, have a husband and wife be the main characters on a show, with the husband being the police chief and the wife being a doctor at a hospital. It would be like peanut butter and chocolate or peanut butter and jelly to some people.

They had a father(doctor) and son(copper) pairing in Diagnostic Murder.

Personally, I thought the pilot had enough in it to take up for the first season or break but I'm not necessarily expecting anything besides fluffy entertainment.

I had an idea like that years ago for a half-hour sitcom:

Lawyer, Doctor, Cop!

A retired Irish-American firefighter-turned-pub-owner has three sons by three different women: a half-black lawyer, a half-Mexican doctor and a half-Asian cop. Every week, they just happen to work on multiple angles of the same overall story before repairing to the pub for catching up and a laugh.

Things get spicy when one of the brothers starts an affair with one of his brothers' mother.

The credits theme goes something like this: "LAWYER... DOCTOR... COP!"

That's not half bad. Ever think of pitching it to them?
