FASA Ships Question

BolianAuthor

Writer, Battlestar Urantia
Rear Admiral
Okay... I finally broke down, and bought a used copy of the original FASA Federation Ship Recognition Manual (yes, folks... the BolianAuthor has never owned a copy before, lol).

So... while I await its arrival from Amazon.com, I would like to know from those who DO have the book, if the following ships are illustrated in it, in TOS form:

- Derf Class

- Baker Class

- Laweya Class

- Overfield Class

- Huron Class

Of course, I'm looking forward to seeing the Loknar and Larson, but I'd just like to know if the above designs are also in the book, and if there are pics of them, or if the above classes are just all fan-created classes?

If I remember, all the ships are illustrated in 3 views, top, front & side.

And each page brings a stranger looking bird than the last.

* Derf Class: Appears in both 1st and 2nd edition, but 1st edition has the art flipped with the Loknar.

* Baker Class: Appears in 2nd edition.

* Laweya Class: Appears in 1st and 2nd edition.

- Overfield Class: Appears in 1st edition.

* Huron Class: Not a FASA ship and doesn't appear in any FASA publication.

Aye, thanks, guys... I bookmarked that site, and it is indeed pretty good. The site I originally found had images, but they were quite a bit smaller.

BolianAuthor, here is a great site for FASA ships: http://home.comcast.net/~ststcsolda/ Has all but the Huron-class.

I second this. it is a great site got most if not all of the ships from the fasa game in it.

Only problem I see with the site is that someone has redrawn a number of the (FASA) canon designs. Some are pretty good, others not so much. I just wish they'd identify their redesigns as such, just so I could be sure which one I was looking at.

Still, a very useful site.

Well, one site I found had a nice TOS version of the Baker-Class, which I really like.

Yeah, many of the ships were redrawn to get around the fact that FASA didn't draw them very well, particularly the Federation ships which are mainly kitbashed from Constitution and Excelsior parts. However, that being said, most of the pages do have links to the original art as well as the redraws. You can also find some of the original art on this excellent site.

If I had a minor quibble with the format of the site, it's that in some areas the author mentions the apparent lack of respect given to FASA and other producers of non-media tie ins (which I agree with), and yet in other parts (like certain ship entries) it's complained that FASA essentially did "nonsensical" things compared to what's been established since in canon, however loosely (most of the Federation ships have transwarp drive for example, which makes sense in the context of when the books were written). I guess I don't entirely understand such criticism since the canon works may have indeed proven some of FASA's ideas "obsolete," but they were used consistently and with far fewer resources available than we have today in terms of how the Trek universe was evolving.

On a purely personal level, for example, I like to imagine that the FASA version of the Ambassador class (which was included in the TNG module on the reference given in "Conspiracy") was largely an experimental class, given the low build number and the large weaponry for a heavy cruiser. Ultimately the design didn't meet its expectations as well as was hoped and the later, more modern Ambassador (II) design (the canon version) followed more closely from designs like the Constitution and was more flexible. That's simply my own speculation, but I like to reconcile as many elements as possible. :D

I just wish some of the FASA designs like the Overfield and Baker would be rendered bigger in TOS-native form, not TMP... I think both classes looks way better in TOS form.

Don't know what edition my copy is, but it has a 1985 copyright date on the Table of Contents page, and it has neither the Laweya nor the Overfield classes.

There can be different "printings" withing the edition numbering.

It wouldn't be too weird for a company to add stuff to a book and release is as the same item#.

My edition has a cutaway of the Remora-class escort on the cover, so God knows what edition it is.

Also, the only pure TOS designs (not blending TOS and TMP parts) in my copy are:

Constitution-class heavy cruiser
Larson-class destroyer
Loknar-class frigate
Nelson-class scout
Derf-class tender
