Weight Room on the Enterprise

*Sigh* I go weeks without trouble and in a few days, they're coming out of the woodwork.

And on the subject of weight-rooms - Charlie X ;)
There was a gym on the Enterprise in “Charlie X”, but we didn’t see any weight machines -- just some cheap tumbling mats.
I always interpreted the levers that "Sam" was pulling as attached to weights:

In Nemesis, Picard stated that he was on his way to the gym. That was in anticipation of being naked in public.

Which must be a powerful motivator.

Right, I didn’t remember those cables. Changing weights must be a bitch, though, if you have to go into another room to do it. Unless resistance was controlled by a switch that we didn’t see.

And what’s this about Kirk being soft? He may not be exactly ripped, but he looks pretty solid. Except for the last few eps of Season 2, when he was getting a noticeable spare tire.

Going by how button-oriented TOS was, I imagine a few clicks of a control panel (along with bloopy sound effects) would change the resistance on the weight levers.

Regarding Kirk, I'm sure I remember reading in one of the books that every season he would start out trim, then gradually get pudgier as the weeks went by. To be honest, I can't really blame Shatner - filming a weekly TV series is a gruelling schedule, something had to give!

It's not unrealistic to think the character Kirk actually gained weight occasionally. Even as early as "The Corbomite Maneuver", Dr. McCoy made a point of adjusting Kirk's diet so he'd lose weight.

No doubt being a commanding officer is demanding, and Kirk sat in the center chair signing fuel reports more often than he exercised.

You really can't compare Vulncanians (I'm including Romulans in that)and humans when it comes to strength.
It's be like comparing me to Professor X. No comparison really.
