What does everyone here listen to? My list is pretty small, as I don't listen to music as often as a lot of other people I know.

My absolutely favorite artist/band is Elton John, of all artists and bands. Closely followed by Billy Joel. But I also avidly listen to Muse. And Linkin' Park. Also adore the band Unheilig [for the voice]. Listen to lots of Trans-Siberian Orchestra as well. Lady Gaga is cool.

...That's a start. I listen to a lot of stuff. :D

My absolutely favorite artist/band is Elton John, of all artists and bands. Closely followed by Billy Joel.

My wife and I went to Las Vegas a couple of years ago. We saw Billy Joel on Saturday and Elton John on Sunday.

Very fun weekend!

:techman:

My taste in music tends towards populist trash, and I don't take any of it seriously. It's almost the antithesis of my taste in film, which tends towards the esoteric and the arthouse circuit. My tastes in games and literature fall somewhere in between, games closer to music and literature closer to film.

Just recently Ke$ha and Cascada have been dominating my playlists.

I mostly like Folk and Celtic Rock and Bluegrass. Bands like Great Big Sea, Spirit of the West, Carbon Leaf, The Duhks and Nickel Creek.

I'm going to omit classical music since the question seems geared more towards modern music. My answers are subject to change depending on mood!

Leonard Cohen is my favorite lyricist.
Mary Fahl of October Project is my favorite female singer.
Jeff Buckley, Tom Waits, and Johnny Cash are my favorite male singers.
The Ark is my favorite for partying or working out.
The Swell Season is a favorite for hopeful depression.
Garbage is my favorite for teenaged angst and erotic melancholy.

Other favorites are:

REM
Arcade Fire
Slowdive
The Smiths
Toad the Wet Sprocket
Modest Mouse
Nick Cave
Van Morrison
Harry Nilsson
David Bowie
The Proclaimers
The Acorn
The Screaming Trees

My absolutely favorite artist/band is Elton John...
Ahhh, Elton. In French class in high school we had to make a French family tree with pictures and labels, etc. We could make up our family members and I chose Elton John and Miss Piggy as my parents.

One of my favorite stories my mom ever told me was about the time she was thrown out of an Elton John concert. She was 15 years old, so it was probably sometime in '76. In the middle of the show she climbed onto her boyfriend's shoulders and pulled off her shirt to reveal her bare breasts with "Elton" written across them in green glitter. It all seems very appropriate to me!

Thrice, especially The Alchemy Index and their latest, Beggars vagrant stream. They're also amazing live, and have some incredible opening acts (I usually walk out with the openers CD, Bad Veins, The Dear Hunter, Kevin Devine, exposed to all of them via Thrice's shows). I have a totally understandable soft-spot for Sufjan Stevens. He's the only Christmas music I'll listen to, and I'm loving his recent release The Age of Adz. I also like the YouTube darlings Pomplamoose, their covers are more fun then they have a right to be, and their original stuff is this great jazz-pop (Not sure if that's a genre, but what the hell). Coheed and Cambria is one of my favorite rock bands today.

As for classical music, I'm hooked on Philip Glass. He is definitely my favorite classical composer of all time. I can't get enough of that repetitive electronic sounding stuff. It sounds very...Cardassian. :cardie:

(seriously. There was a thread here awhile back over what kind of music Cardassians might like, and his name came up. Think about it!)

I grew up listening to Billy Joel and Elton John, and I still enjoy their stuff. I also like classic rock from the 60s and 80s - though I hate thinking of the 80s as "classic" - I was in high school, and I am not an "oldie"! ;)

I've been to several concerts over the years: I've seen Billy Idol, Genesis, Jeff Healey, and a few others. I also like the limited selection of Coldplay songs I've heard, but I don't know their stuff very well at all.

But my absolute favourites, and the singers/groups who are in heaviest rotation on my iPod, are Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, Depeche Mode, Rufus Wainwright and Lady Gaga. (If that makes me a walking stereotype, so be it. :p)

I do have an absolute favourite, and that's Matthew Good and/or the late Matthew Good Band.

Other than that I could go on about rock, folk, blues and jazz musicians forever.

I'm going to omit classical music since the question seems geared more towards modern music.

I was always a fan of Nigel Kennedy, ever since his iconic recording of Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" and have even paid some attention to his later, let's just say more "experimental" career. I've also been a fan of Evgeny Kissin, Vanessa-Mae, Lang Lang, Nicola Benedetti, Bryn Terfel, Luciano Pavarotti, Russell Watson, Renee Fleming, and more recently Katherine Jenkins and Rolando Villazon.

As for classical music "bands" of a sort, I've always had a soft spot for the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland, and the world famous London Symphony Orchestra. Among my favourite conductors are Leonard Slatkin, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Herbert von Karajan, Tadaaki Otaka, and of course the legendary Andre Previn. :guffaw:
