Not quite sure where to post this? Hope I picked the right forum.
NASA scientists have named John Cusack's blockbuster 2012 as the most "absurd" sci-fi film of all time.

I have not sat down and watched it, But I have been in the room while it was on and the little bits that I saw made me :lol:.
I really love this bit.....
The agency is getting so many questions from people terrified that the world is going to end in 2012 that we have had to put up a special website to challenge the myths.
Does it say at the end of the credits that this film is a piece of fiction:confused:

Well OF COURSE NASA is poo-poo'ing it.. It's all a big government conspiracy to conceal the truth.. :rommie:

The movie itself is an enjoyable romp, if a bit bleak at times with all the death and distruction. Pure popcorn pleasure.

I'm sure it does, but who stays to read the credits anymore? And lots of people believe the things they're shown in fiction. For instance, victims of automobile accidents are sometimes further injured by misguided samaritans who rush to get them away from their cars because they believe that crashed cars really do blow up like they do in fiction.

And of course, if a work of fiction is based on folklore or fraudulent claims that have a prior real-world existence, like 2012 or Capricorn One, then that fictional work can further propagate the false idea, and thus it's necessary to counter it by getting the truth out there. As the article says, a lot of people are genuinely afraid that the world will end in 2012, because that myth has been around well before the film came out, and the film has just made those unfounded fears worse.

2012 is going to be far worse than the Y2K disaster.

All that's necessary for any event to be a worse "disaster" than Y2K is for someone to get a hangnail.

Heh-heh. I think it'll be about the same, since of course there was no Y2K disaster. But that's different, because that was a case where there was a legitimate (though exaggerated) risk but a successful effort was made to prevent it. The whole 2012 thing is a complete fantasy based on a very foolish modern misinterpretation of an ancient calendar. There's nothing to prepare for, nothing to guard against -- beyond ignorance, irrational fear, and the willingness of charlatans to exploit them.

If Schwarzenegger were still making movies like he made in the '80s and early '90s, he'd stop the 2012 apocalypse... with bullets!

Tell that to the aliens when they start probing your rectum.

Didn't he already stop the Y2K apocalypse in End of Days? 2012 will be a cakewalk.

NASA clearly have a lot of time on their hands now that Constellation has been shitcanned. Quick, someone approve the Mars Direct plan before they get around to watching Armageddon or Signs! ;)

Maybe someone could start a new Heaven's Gate so we can get rid of them before 2012 actually rolls round? :D
