Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (aka Warriors of the Wind)

Awesome 1984 Sci-fi/fantasy epic from Hayao Miyazaki that is his second movie after "Castle of Cogliostro" and became a major box-office hit in Japan besides Ghostbusters and Gremlins.

This movie is a cross between Star Wars and Frank Herbert's Dune novels and James Cameron's Avatar. It came to the US in 1985 from New World Pictures in a heavily cut 93 minute version called "Warriors of the Wind" which had a respectable voice cast like Hal Smith and Cam Clarke which i saw and loved as a kid at 5 back in the early 80's then i saw the uncut fansub tape in 97 when i was 15/16 as i realized what a bad cut the Warriors of the Wind was but i accepted it and also taped the uncut fansub version as i waited years for a DVD that can have a better dub and uncut with subtitles thus in 2004 my dream came true. I also collected some of the mangas as a teenager plus also had a crush on Nausicaa for the longest time for she is one hot anime chick.

This is the 1984 Sci-fi epic that the promising "Dune" should have been that year when Nausicaa was a great masterpiece while David Lynch's attempt of putting the awesome Sci-fi book Dune on the big screen was a bust.

I just saw this for the first time the other day. My wife and I loved Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle, so we decided to use a Barnes & Noble gift card on another Miyazaki film. I thought it was great, aside from a few portions of the 80's soundtrack in which synthesized music did not fit well with what was happening onscreen. Miyazaki has one impressive imagination.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is easily my second favorite of his movies, topped only by Princess Mononoke (which is probably my favorite movie of all time).

Who thinks this movie influenced James Cameron's Avatar? you can tell similarities since Cameron was influenced and he is a huge fan of animation/anime/Miyazaki/Ghibli.

And does anyone agree with me that it's the film the same year's Dune should have been?

Nausicaa is my second favorite Miyazaki film right after Mononoke. I can't spell either of those two titles right.

That's one of the Miyazaki movies I never get to finish. Every time I've ever sat down to watch it something awful or insane happens around/to me, and I have to address that instead. It's weird and kind of annoying.

Nausicaa is okay, but it is clearly the work of a less seasoned film maker. It lacks the polish that later films like My Neighbor Totoro or Spirited Away have.

I think that depends on whicch version you saw. The 1984 Warriors of the Wind had I believe 22 minutes cut from the original Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind Japanese version. I think they've restored the cut footage on the most recent DVD release (done by Disney); but it's been a few years since I last took a look at it.

Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind rates #3 for me behind:

#1) Princess Monanokye (and I'm NOT a fantasy fan normally, but I like this a lot)

and

#2) My Neighbor Tortoro (And I usually HATE Disney-esque films; but this one works for me for some strange reason.) And it's the most Disney-like animated film he's done, which means I should dislike it, but I don't.) My sister was scared (as she knows my taste in anime) when I reccommended this as a film that my 6 year old nieces would like - and she ended up hating me for another reason...namely she bought it for them, and once they both saw it; they watched it over and over again, and loved it, to the point my sister could recite dialog from it verbatim. ;)

This might be the first full length animie I ever saw. I loved it then and bought the DvD when I first had the chance.

I watched this about four years ago but I barely remember anything about it as I found it so dull. I might like it more if I revisited it, but I just remember having no idea what the hell was going. It was only hearing Captain Picard & Admiral Adama's voices that pirked my interest really :)

The only thing I'll disagree on is that Nausicaa isn't a cross between ANY other films. It's unique and special. I also first saw it as the horrible HBO cut (Princess Zondra?!!? :wtf: ), and later sought out full versions, subbed and later dubbed. I still think it's one of the best anime films ever made.

I have the model kits from the film, and, oh man, how I would love to own my own full-sized, working Meave!

Did you know Hal Smith, Cam Clarke and Linda Gary were voices?
