First White Christmas!

I'm in Georgia. The South. We don't often have snow. If we DO have snow, we get it in February or March. So, I've never had a white Christmas - ever. I'd resigned myself to being content with a cold, dry Christmas for the rest of my life.

THIS YEAR, WE GOT SNOW. I'm giddy with delight! So happy! Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!

So, do you usually get snow? Any particularly fun/interesting Christmas snow stories to share?

I hate snow. I don't care if we have a white Christmas. I would much rather have a Christmas that has no snow, if it means that we can get around the city without being stranded in waist deep snowdrifts and/or auguring our cars into each other.

No, we never get snow at Christmas, mainly because it's summer...and that we don't get snow anytime of the year.

I have had a white Christmas in I think it was 1991, I was in England at the time and it snowed heavily during the night and throughout the next morning/day. I remember running down stairs and opening up the mail slot in the door to look out to see if it was snow I could hear when I got up in the morning. I was 8, it wasn't the first time I'd seen snow but I'd spent most of my life living on an island in the South Pacific, so it was a huge novelty to have it on Christmas. The only thing I remember, apart from the excitement, is that I saw a bit pile of snow in the backyard, ran at it to climb it and jumped onto it and ended up in a bush that the snow had covered.

Well, I live in Canada, and not in Toronto or Vancouver, so yeah, we pretty much always have a white Christmas.

I have a love\hate relationship with snow, myself. There are times where it's absolutely beautiful, and there's something to be said for being out in the woods when it's snowy. I also adore the crunching sound that fresh snow makes when you step in it.

On the other hand, when you get 50 cm of it overnight, it can be a real pain in the ass.

Funny, I have quite a few people from Atlanta on my Facebook friendslist, and many of them are cursing the snow. Mostly because nobody there seems to know how to drive in it.

I was in Atlanta for New Year's this year, and I remember seeing a few flakes. I hadn't expected to need to wear my winter coat while there, but I don't think I wore anything else when I was out.

Well, I live in Canada, and not in Toronto or Vancouver, so yeah, we pretty much always have a white Christmas.

Sure, make all the foreigners think that Canada is some tiny little country with the same weather everywhere. Here in Toronto, it's cold (-7C/18F right now), but there are only a few patches of snow on the ground here and there, left over from earlier in the week.

Indeed. I don't think I'll ever forget the blizzard we had a couple of years ago, when I was working about 90 minutes north of my apartment. The bus I was on got stuck on ice and the driver kicked us out - we had to walk back to the previous stop to wait for the next bus. I had no idea whether I was on the sidewalk or the road. Fortunately, there were very few people out driving that evening.

The North Atlantic Drift keeps Ireland snow-free most of the time and usually if it did snow it would snow in February, not December. Bizarrely, the climate has been shifting over the last few years and snow in December has become more common. About 5 years ago we had snow on Christmas day, but the ground was wet and it melted on landing.

Last year, it snowed a week before Christmas and left a layer of snow that lasted until Christmas day, so I guess that was my first true white Christmas even though there was no snow on Christmas itself. This year, there was no snow where I live, but temperatures were so cold over the last week that severe frost formed and left a snow-like layer on everything, so I'm counting that too.

Mmh, somehow I was under the impression global climate change would get us more extreme weather in Central Europe, i.e. hotter summers and colder winters.
I actually like the snow even though it usually leads to all around traffic chaos and nobody seems to care enough to actually clear the sidewalks where I live.
So, while it's not always been a white Christams for me, it happens pretty often. This year, too.

Around here it's a white Christmas about half of the time. We do get snow often in winter, but not always around Christmas. We had snow a week ago (a few inches), but all we had yesterday was rain and fog. On the other hand, we were calve-deep in snow last year. So it varies.

I'm in Southern-East-TN, and to all those folks down here who wished for a "white Christmas": Fuck you! I hate the snow. Cold, gray, overcast, I can deal with-- actually like it cause it feels better on joints, the migraines are a twitch less, and deadens the sunlight so my eyes don't ache as bad-- but the snow, fuck that shit.

1985 at Fort Riley Kansas. My first blizzard was almost a year before in January when the first time we went out to the field we were hit. I was sure I was going to die that day as our tanks would struggle up a small hill then slide back down just short of the crest.

There's White Christmases, and WHITE Christmases. I suppose I've had about 3+ "technical" ones (as in a few light flakes on the day), but I don't really remember them, nor count them as quite as White as when there's snow on the ground, even if it's not actually snowing (and so not technically accurate as a White Christmas). This year fell into the latter category and I can only remember a couple of them in total.

As for a really WHITE Christmas (as in snow on the ground, plus snow falling), well I don't think that's happened where I live since about the early/mid-80s.

Not going to happen, mate. It's virtually impossible, unless we're responsible to take care of the planet, so it's not going to happening.

Yup, that's generally seen as the most likely change for Europe, in large part due to ice melt from Greenland mitigating the effect of the Gulf Stream.
