    Firefly? Whats that?

J/k'ing. What I meant to say was, OMG! DON'T WALK, RUN TO THE STORE AND BUY THE BOX SET!

Definately one of the more entertaining SF shows ever made. Like his other series, nothing huge and heavy, but plenty of fun to be had.

No robots. But its got a River.

LOVE it! But if your vision of scifi is limited to killer robots... don't even go there.

Was fan, WAS being the operative word. Over the years it's sort of lost its polish for me. Still a fun little watch every once in a while, but for the most part I've lost interest in the franchise.

Indeed. I had to google it to even see what you were talking about. Seems the show was cancelled midway through its first season, which can't bode well for its quality.

Still, I appreciate it when people bring up and discuss more obscure sci-fi titles which have not been hashed to death on these forums, so I'd be interested to see your reacton to it.

I feel like Firefly is the Arrested Development of Sci Fi. Everyone who watched it loved it, yet not many people watched it.

Edit: Kegg, you're being sarcastic, right?

Well, I watched it and liked it, but I wouldn't say I loved it. It was enjoyable, but it didn't really suck me in that much. It does have a very passionate fanbase, though.

As regards the original post, yeah, I think it's worth checking out. Not my favourite sci-fi series, but pretty good nonetheless.

I suspect it's heavilytongue-in-cheek. And for heavily, I mean "neutron star conditions" heavy. ;)

I think it's a bit overrated, and like most shows it drags sometimes and is hard to watch for the first few episodes. On the other hand, when it works, it really works. And like all shows by Whedon, it has superb casting and delightful dialog (except the Chinese swearing thing in this annoys the HELL out of me). It has its weak episodes, but if you can get past the parts that drag, it's a very rewarding series to watch and not that hard to watch even with the weak spots since it's only one season long.

I enjoyed Firefly. I liked Whedon's take on a sci-fi future and the bantor and humor he creates for his characters, like in BTVS and Angel. There isn't a great emphasis put on the science and tech like in Trek, but I think a lot is put into the characters. It often feels a bit like a "western" set in space. Like nuBSG, humans seem to be the only kids on the block. No aliens with fake foreheads or nose ridges, and no shrieking, bumpy, oversized salt shakers with plungers sticking out the front.

I never did much care for FF. I guess I'm just not in its target market. I have never much liked those renegades/rebels/rogues type of characters, and when you've got a show where ALL the protagonists are exactly that, it's a big red-flag for me. Also, I do so hate Whedon-style dialogue, I hate it with the fire of a thousand suns...

In the end, I take myself, the world, and my preferred kind of sci-fi just way too seriously. Nobody in FF (well, none of the main characters, anyway) seems to take anything seriously, and that's why I can't relate to it. In the show's terms, I'm definitely more of a Purple Belly than a Browncoat (if I had to imagine myself as a character on the show, that's definitely what I would be).

That being said, I would definitely be interested in a re-telling of the existing episodes, but from the point of view of the Alliance. Trek comics did that awhile back with Blood Will Tell - a series of comics that retold certain TOS episodes that involved Klingons, but from the point of view OF the Klingons. I wonder how different some of those FF stories would have been if they had given the Alliance POV a chance to be told.

I will say that the one FF story I actively enjoyed is one which does not, technically, exist. I think it's an unproduced script - can't remember its title, but it's one where one of Mal's old cohorts from the browncoat days was going around killing people and blowing up Alliance settlements and all that. Mal finally corners him and says something like "It isn't war when they're not shooting at you. Then it's just plain murder." I rather enjoyed when he said that. :techman:

If you feel unsure to shell out for something you've never seen, try a few episodes on Hulu.com (if you don't live in hte U.S.A., I can't gurantee you'll be able to access them).

Asking us if it's worth watching, is very, very subjective. Some people hate "E.T.", some people actually like "Cleopatra 2525". You never know.

Loved it - one of my all-time favorite space shows, largely because the characters weren't dorky stereotypes addressing one another by rank all the time and they didn't bore me whenever they talked. Same goes for Farscape, for that matter. OTOH, if Babylon 5 epitomizes what you think this kind of show should aspire to, you might as well skip Firefly.

    Yes, Firefly is worth watching.
No, there are no aliens or robots or space anomalies or time travel or any of that other sci-fi jazz.

Another reason I didn't like it.
