The spirit of Santa Claus....

Warped9

It's often said, and sometimes with disturbingly malicious glee, that there is no Santa Claus, that he doesn't and has never existed.

Of course many of us know something of the origins of Santa Claus and the different names he has been known by through time and different names he continues to be known by throughout the world. Most of us are familiar with the connection of Nicholas of Myra in what is now modern day Turkey.

Nicholas was know to represent many different things and people, but he is perhaps best known for being the patron saint of children. And the stories are often repeated of how he anonymously would leave coins in the homes of the poor and with small children. From that it's easy to see the evolution of the story of Santa Claus giving children toys for Christmas.

But a conversation yesterday I had with my parents made me think of a rebuttal to those who like to assert that there is no real Santa Claus. Throughout the year and particularly at Christmas there are countless people who donate their time and efforts to help those less fortunate and in need, particularly children. There are those who make the effort to provide something for children of poor and less fortunate families. In their own way are they not being like Santa Claus and St. Nicholas before him?

The real spirit of Santa Claus isn't in the giving of extravagant and expensive gifts and gadgets---that's the hijacked commercial version of Santa. Santa's real spirit is in kindness, compassion, cheer, tolerance and goodwill. After all doesn't "Santa" Claus translate as "Saint" Claus?

In that real sense then Santa Claus exists and is real as his spirit is manifest in everyone and anyone who undertakes to enact a kindness be it large or small. That person, for however long the moment, becomes Santa Claus and whether they're dressed up in a familiar holiday suit or not.

Just a thought for this holiday.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

All I can say to that, for the moment, is "Amen".

Merry Christmas, Warped9.

Beautifully said, Warped9. Santa Claus only doesn't exist if we don't want him to, and I don't want to live in that kind of world.

What a lovely thread. Thank you WARPED9. Merry Christmas to you and to everyone here! I do love this place very much. :)

Yes, all the various legends of Santa Claus-like figures represent something in the Human spirit: The ability to empathize with others and respond with generosity. :mallory:

The Santa Claus ideal is certainly something to try to live up to and emulate. I am generally somewhat jaundiced when it comes to humanity, but it is nice to read an optimistic entry like this. If more people would feel like this, there's still hope.

I played Santa at work this year as I have the previous three years. Yet each time I never once tried to promote any particular product or item or service. I merely greeted people, joked with them and handed out treats and candies to children and adults alike. On Sunday afternoon I went out for a walk about the neighbourhood and greeted people and kids (and handed out treats) on the street as well folks shoveling their driveways from the previous day's snowfall. Cars honked and people waved as they drove by.

One woman stopped her SUV, rolled down her window and exclaimed, "Oh my God! Kids, look who it is!" She had three little kids that I greeted and gave each a candy cane. She then jumped out of her with her camera, took a few shots then hugged(!) me and said "thank you" before getting back into her vehicle and driving away.

I'm lucky, too, that I have a very natural sounding Santa laugh as I mostly use my natural laughter and change the sound from ha, ha, ha to ho, ho, ho. People always smile and laugh when they hear it and I really get into the character.

This year I'm also hoping to make a stop at some of the senior residence apartments in the area.

This is basically my response when the kids ask whether there really is a Santa Claus. It's the truth, which they hear in their own way.

This is lovely. If you wouldn't mind, I'd like to forward what you've written to everyone in my e-mail book and ask them to pass it on. I'd post on FB, but I don't know how practical it would be.

^^ Go ahead. I tried to post it on my wall and got a message that it was too long.

Make a post on your wall called "A Christmas Message" and then when you post it, comment below and add your text, because there's no text limit for comments.
