Impact on the Franchise

I can't imagine a Star Trek series failing on Syfy for example,
I can, but remember, failure is judged financially. Skiffy may simply not have the viewership to support a quality Star Trek production. For Star Trek to be reduced to a non-quality production would be failure by definition and also a very stupid move from a brand management perspective. I hope Star Trek is in the hands of smarter people than that. It's suffered enough poor management as it is.

Also, NBC Universal owns Skiffy and CBS owns Star Trek rights on TV - nobody makes shows for rival networks anymore, so Skiffy isn't an option anyway. The options are CBS, CW and Showtime - all of which are bad fits in various ways.

I don't think that would be an issue. BSG, Caprica and SGU are all of a higher production quality than any of the Star Trek series thus far.

If it tops out at three movies - well, that's three more movies than anyone had a reason or right to expect four years ago. And they they'll probably restart Trek again, just like Spider-Man or Batman.

I have to say that's the last thing I want to see Trek turned into, Batman and Spiderman.

Star Trek should not forever be about Kirk and Spock.

I think the odds are good that Star Trek will be about Kirk and Spock for the foreseeable future. I think there's even a good chance the next Trek TV series will be about Kirk and Spock (ala another reboot) if the movies eventually take a break from Trek for awhile...

Sure it should.

Coming from a guy who wrote TNG episodes. Traitor and hypocrite! :guffaw:

How does that make him either? And why would that be so hilarious?

When people think about Star Trek, the first thing that comes to mind for the casual fan is Kirk and Spock, so why shouldn't a rebooted franchise capitalize on that?

Yeah, wow...I'd be pretty surprised if any of those cost as much as Trek. For starters, they film in Canada to get production credits to drive down the costs. Otherwise, they'd be in LA. BSG in particular did a great job stretching what had to be a sketchy budget and getting the most out of it. I respected the creativity behind it, but there's a reason everyone wore suits and ties, and used whiteboards. That saves on the expense of actually creating a futuristic wardrobe for everyone in the cast, and creating some futuristic gizmo for every element they use, right down to the whiteboards. So much cheaper to just get everything from Wal-Mart.

And Skiffy isn't an option. It's owned by NBC. CBS owns the TV rights to Star Trek. CBS isn't going to make Star Trek and sell it to NBC. Nobody does that anymore. They make shows for their own outlets.

Sure it should.

It should capitalize on it now, and use it as a springboard for other things in the future. Sooner or later the audience is going to get sick of Kirk and Spock. That's natural, and there's no reason for Star Trek to have to rely on them exclusively.

I have a question, what Movie or series in recent memory has seen more merchadise (action figures, models etc. ) sold?

I constantly see Star trek (abrams) stuff on clearance in the toy section and wonder why it was produced in such bulk if they were taking a chance on rebooting the series?

just an interesting side note... my son also has a jazdia dax figure from the diamond select DS9 line.

^Next Gen was a huge merchandise machine in the early-to-mid-90's.

It seems that someone expected Star Wars-level sales from the STXI toys. During a recession. When the figures were as basic as could be imagined and the bridge set was pitiful.

They never even did a Robau figure:shrug:.
