THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till release

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

I have seen it several times in a row now and think it's pretty awesome.

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

Very nice. I tighter version of the ComicCon footage but that's fine by me. This is a good first trailer for the masses.
I liked this paragraph from the Yahoo! article.
Feige says that the backstory is Thor is from a race of otherworldly beings who live in a realm called Asgard. But they are able to travel to different worlds, and they arrived on our planet in Scandinavia a thousand years ago. Feige says that since they were so superior to the humans they encountered, "the locals interpreted them as gods and started mimicking some of their clothing and some of their helmet and weapon designs." Since what appears to be mystical is actually technological, Thor's powers aren't that different from Iron Man's or Captain America's.
Several people have voiced a concern about mixing 'gods', aliens I suppose works, with the more modern "real world" feel of Iron Man and Captain America.

If they are successful in communicating that Thor's world, Asgard, is just another type of technology it shoud make the transistion for those determined to make it an issue a non-issue. Could also serve to lay ground work for Mandarin in an Iron Man 3.

Afterall no one questions Supermans alien, god like, attributes. I see no difference in selling this same idea in a THOR movie.

Or powerful being from another dimension, like Dormammu. I guess there would be some mysticism about him though.

I think the trailer looks great. Thor has always looked like a tough movie to pull off and to set in the more realistic (well, you know what I mean) Marvel-verse, but it really looks like Branagh has done it. Can't wait.

That was one of the ideas that Warren Ellis used in his four-issue Worldengine storyline in the run-up to Heroes Reborn -- the Norse Gods weren't actually gods, they were just aliens who might as well have been gods as far as humans were concerned. (And, interestingly enough, Marvel is reprinting Worldengine in the spring, just before the movie hits.)

It's a nice idea, though one that has, in general, been quietly ignored. As an example, Michael Avon Oeming's "Ragnarok" storyline (Thor: Disassembled) doesn't make any sense if the Norse Gods aren't actually gods. (Of course, it also doesn't make sense how, if the Fenris Wolf consumed all creation, the Marvel Earth would still exist after that storyline since it's one of the Nine Worlds.)

Frankly I think people or over thinking how to merge Thor with Ironman/Captain America/Hulk...afterall IM and Cap are just as unrealistic as Thor and the real fun of The Avengers movie will be having Downey's IM dealing with Thor and what he is.

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

^ Like the saying goes, technology is indistinguishable from magic. Or something like that.

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

And that statement was made in the 70s, AFTER Marvel's Thor had been around for a decade. So Thor is a defining example that LED to that statement in the first place!

Hell, Niven said that any advanced enough magic would be indistinguishable from technology. It goes both ways!

The trailer is put together better than the convention footage. Looking forward to it!

No, I don't think Arthur C. Clarke had Marvel comics in mind when he made that observation.

This looks great, definitely going to this one.

Me too..more than before,actually.
Good trailer, better than Green Lanterns, IMHO:cool:
Looks like the film will be visually very nice and Hopkins is doing good job as Odin.
I am still very happy that they cast Natalie Portman as the female lead, rather than some generic babe:)
Good casting, all in all:bolian:

And this is my main gripe so far with the Thor movie.. i really dislike that whole direction that the Norse gods are not mythical in nature but rather highly evolved and technologically superior aliens. WTF? Why are the producers scared to introduce real life mythology and magic into their movie universe?
We already have very advanced technology that's SF to us (Iron Man) and genetic powers (X-Men) so what's so unrealistic or scary about magic and mythology? I for one would have loved for them to dig deep down into Norse mythology and not bother too much twisting it so it fits in realistically into the movieverse. After all having guys shooting energy beams out of the eyes is pretty much impossible too.

From the first pictures i disliked the visual style of Asgard.. too polished and corporate HQ looking with all these shiny surfaces and high tech looking designs. I just hope the rest of the movie knocks it out of the park for me to overlook these choices.

Agreed. The Comic-Con trailer worried me. This more polished trailer alleviates some of my worries.

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

I have no problem with the film interpreting the Norse Gods as alien beings...this is no different than that one "Star Trek" episode postulating that the Greek Gods were aliens, isn't that what the proposed "Planet of the Titans" was going to be about? These films aren't about appeasing normal comic book fans but generating interest and presenting the source material in a way that will be interesting to a general audience. I thought Asgard looked very visually stunning...and I thought the "wormhole" "dimensional portal" representation of
Bifrost (or the Rainbow Bridge that connects Midgard to Asgard( was really cool)
