Ind. wants to let the baby die

^^ It's an experimental procedure. There's only one doctor who performs it, there's been only 60 performed, there's a 30% mortality rate and no long-term outcome information. This is something that has to be funded privately.

What I'm wondering is, though, if it's experimental why is there no research funding?
Ok, so do the surgery, and then worry about the private funding later...

Unfortunately, here in the U.S., insurance doesn't work that way, and someone's insurance provider is what stands between them and their doctor, and ties the doctor's hands. Before any major, or even minor, procedure is performed, insurance is checked. If they don't cover it, or you don't have insurance, you're going to be very hard pressed to get that procedure, no matter how important it is.

you people really need to unfuck a few things before you continue on claiming that America is the greatest country on earth.

no offense meant to anyone, but damn. this is so fucked up that i don't know if i should laugh or cry. hell, just do the damn surgery and worry about the costs when the kid isn't dying anymore. heavens... what are they thinking?

I don't remember such a thing being claimed by any American citizen that I've met. A lot of Americans actually think that everything needs a lot more fixing than Obama or anybody else can do in a 4-8 year term. Americans get just as pissed off when you say we're ignorant idiots as other nations do when we spout whatever stereotype is specific to said nation.

And despite it being experimental the Australian government is willing to pay the medical costs for the Australian baby who needs this very operation. The family does have to raise money so that both parents can spend 8 months in the USA. I am not sure who is paying for the air fares.

O rly? Cause i've heard it on more occasions than i can count. Did you never wonder where the term "American supremeism" originated from?

And they're right. This is a perfect example of something that is in dying(literally) need of fixing.

I beg your pardon? Where did i say that you're ignorant idiots? I never said such a thing. On the contrary. I only said that you guys need to unfuck a lot of things. So does Sweden or Hungary, for that matter.

Someone always pays for experimental procedures. They're not free just because they're experimental. That's why I'm wondering where the research money is.

Just bumping this to let everyone know that the baby's life-saving procedure will be covered now, so that's good news:

MDwise Inc. and AmeriHealth Mercy of Indiana decided to pay for the procedure after weighing the evidence and potential outcomes, according to a news release.

"Based on Seth's unique and compelling story, we believe making a compassionate allowance in this case is appropriate," said Caroline Carney Doebbeling, MDwise's chief medical officer.

Thank god. I guess not every corporation is run by greedy, heartless bastards.

And Miss Chicken-thank you for your contributions, too, on this posting. :techman:

It has nothing to do with being heartless. Experimental procedures are not covered by insurance. Hopefully this will be successful.

No, procedures, medications and treatments are considered experimental until they are perfected and demonstrated to be effective. This procedure is not yet approved by the FDA. There are lots of procedures that are being developed that are experimental and therefore not covered by insurance, because the purpose of insurance is not to fund research.
