Does Andy Mangels still write Trek?

Recently checked the upcoming books thread and noticed that Seize the Fire by Michael A. Martin will be out very soon.

It got me thinking though, both Mangles and Martin used to collaborate frequently on Trek Books (many of which I have enjoyed) but as of late, I've only seen Martin's name around. Did something happen to Andy Mangles? Did they stop writing together? Does he still write Trek?

Just curious.

Been looking forward to more Trek Lit, after the dry spell over the past several months.

Seize the Fire is out now, actually. :) I've a copy sitting on my bookcase. According to his website, he's still writing for a Trek magazine, but the last book listed is Kobayashi Maru in 2008.

I'm pretty sure I've seen Andy posts here still, but just in case he doesn't, I'll fill you in. First off Andy and Michael don't write together anymore, and before you ask no we don't know why. People have asked several times but nobody will say why. Andy has not written anything since they stopped writing together, although he did make a pitch for a Titan comic book that he wanted to co-write with Tim Russ. I don't think IDW went for it, which is hugely disappointing. I know I would have gone for it in a heartbeat.

Re: Does Andy Mangles still write Trek?

IIRC, he said he was through with Trek when he announced the failiure of the Titan comic project, right here in one of the comics threads.

Re: Does Andy Mangles still write Trek?

Andy Mangles recently did an interview for Star trek.com he mentions he's writing his own original novels that he's working on other projects. He was asked if Pocket books asked him to write a new Startrek novel he said yes he'd like to write more novels under the right circumstances.

Re: Does Andy Mangles still write Trek?

The above answers pretty well sum things up from my other posts.

I'd be happy to write Trek again - in books or comics or any other form - if things worked out.

But the landscape has changed for the book companies, with editorial oustings and line cutbacks.

And IDW has not been interested in working with a tried-and-true best-selling Trek author who wrote comics for over 20 years.

I am writing every now and again for the Trek magazine.

And we'll see what the future holds from there.

Thanks for asking!

Somebody PLEASE fix the title of the thread to spell my name correctly, though. ;>

So it's nothing to do with a falling out with Mr Martin then?

I still can't believe that IDW passed up a series based on a popular novel series, written by one of the very successful authors of that series, and a regular cast member from one of the TV series. To me, that just seems like a no brainer.

Mr. Martin and Mr. Mangels still remain friends they are just doing different things.

Re: Does Andy Mangles still write Trek?

Actually, we no longer have any contact whatsoever... good, bad, or indifferent.

Whether we will have contact, or work together, in the future, remains to be seen.

And that's about all I will say about the matter. Thanks for understanding.

Re: Does Andy Mangles still write Trek?

Sorry to hear this Andy (yay, we share a first name). I've really enjoyed your contributions to Trek, and hope there will be more at some point.

This reminds me that I need to work my way further into The Real Ghostbusters DVDs.

I haven't read any of IDW's comics myself, but yeah, you'd think such a series would be a no-brainer. I'd think a Titan series featuring a fairly popular TNG character would sell pretty well.

Why? I'm not sure any of their stuff outside of the Star Trek 2009 material has sold very well. Someone had a chart that I believe showed Trek titles moving between five and eight thousand units per issue.

I may be misremembering though...

Other than the first TNG mini-series (The Space Between), the New Frontier mini-series, and Countdown, 24th-century Star Trek comics have been fair-to-middling performers for IDW. As much as I would like to see IDW try an ongoing Titan series (as IDW has started doing ongoings for properties like Transformers, Doctor Who, and G.I. Joe, moving away from their mini-series model), I suspect that the IDW editors and bean-counters would look at the proposal, look at sales figures on previous 24th-century projects (like Intelligence Gathering or Fool's Gold), and say, politely, "Thanks, but no thanks."

Sorry. I was just posting info based on a conversation I had with Mike.

Ah, thank you for the information. Like I said, I don't really follow the comics, so I didn't know 24th-century stuff wasn't selling too well for IDW.
