"Make it so" - kind of a peculiar thing to say?

Cadet49

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
You know, I always liked TNG and Picard was one of my favorite characters on the series, but every time he would say, "Make it so", I would cringe a bit. I know it eventually became his character's catch phrase, but I always found it a bizarre and slightly condescending way to ask a collegue to do something ... he might as well have said, "Let it be so."

Seriously, how would you feel if, when you told your boss about a task that needed to be done, he said, "Make it so."

Employee: "Um ... the photocopier is out of staples - should I go get some more?"
Boss: "Yes ... make it so."
Employee: "Ummm... okaaaay."

Just a peculiar thing to say... anyone else feel it was a bit of a weird choice on the writer's part

What are you talking about????????? MAKE IT SO IS AWSUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can use Make it so anywhere. Besides it's the future, they talk differently there.

'Shiny'

The writers didn't come up with it. They lifted (or borrowed) it from Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin novels. It was Jack Aubrey's catch phrase before it was Jen-Luc Picard's. But it was the past; they talked differently there. ;)

Hey, don't have a cow, man!

(Sorry- I could not resist!)

I agree with you a bit, but I have had real world examples of professors, bosses, friends, and co-workers who went through phases with using somewhat annoying catch phrases, greetings and nicknames. Annoying at times, but not too bad....

Picard can talk whatever way he wants. He's the C.O. of a friggin’ starship. At least “Make it so” sounds better than “Okay, let’s boogie!”

Haha - yep, he's the captain. I just wonder, if sometimes, after he walked out of the room, Riker didn't turn to Troi and Worf and say sarcastically,

RIKER: "'Make it so' ... 'Make it so' ... I swear, if he says that one more time, I'm gonna go nuts!!! Sheesh!"

WORF: "Indeed. It is most annoying."

RIKER: "And I'm a person, not a number, dammit! My name is WILL, not No. 1 ... WIIIIIIIILL!!! It's been seven years, for crying out loud, and it's like he can't remember my name, so he just calls me a number!!! How would you like it if I called you Crewman 179, huh? How would you like that, fella???"

WORF: "I would be most ... displeased."

I think its better than Janeways infamous "Do It", although "Do It" is cooler in a lot more situations, I think "Make It So" goes well with Picard's character, its just one of this things that Patrick Stewart did so well in his portrayal of Captain Picard

“I mean, it’s not like I’m the producer’s girlfriend in a dark wig -- or the dude who runs that pretty little Welsh village with all the kidnapped spies!”

Ah... The Prisoner!

I don't think you ever find out who Number 1 was, it would be one heck of an anti-climax if Jonathan Frakes appeared exercising on the Gym Ball that was once Rover

Eh, I liked it. He's their commander, & it's a command. A hell of a lot more civil compared to Jellico's "Get it done!"

At least it's not overly dramatic, like "Administer it thusly"

I like it. A lot of people have those sorts of catch phrases. One shift manager I had used to conclude every pre-shift with, "Make it a good one." And how can you not love Tim Gunn's "Make it work."

I also like Pike's "punch it."
