I'm thinking of leaving TrekBBS due to the ads.

I've been a member of TrekBBS since I believe 2003 or something like that and have enjoyed coming here talking about Star Trek and other topics but I'm seriously thinking of leaving because the ads here lately have been kind of annoying. I haven't decided yet, because I do enjoy the discussions, but I am also tired of coming here and having an ad cover most of my screen and some I can't even exit out of.

So my question is, can you give me a reason to stay?

TrekBBS is a great community and you're not likely to find another one that's so inviting, fun to talk to and active anywhere else.

If you don't like the ads get a Premium Membership. It costs $25 a year, or about 50-cents a week and it's worth it. You don't get ads whatsoever (no pop-ups, no banners, nothing. The "worst" is the damn Twitter bird in the sidebar) you get to make a custom user title, more space for PMs and I believe a handful of other perks.

Ok, here:

So true.

Indeed. The twitter bird doesn't really bother me. Plus there is access to the Premium Members Lounge.

I think the OP is looking for some reasons to stay, perhaps they have come to the end of their tether with the Ads and would like some justification about their decision, whether to stay or go

Quite frankly i'm with the majority, its not worth complaining about, if you really can't work with the ads, get a Premium Membership, not only does it grant you Zero Ads, but you also recieve numerous other benefits... As an earlier poster pointed out, its equivalent to $0.50 a week (or 20p if you are in the UK)

If I, who am only on a disability pension, can afford a Premium membership, than most other members (but not all) can as well. It all depends I suppose on how much Trekbbs means to you. As far as I am concerned it is the first place I visit each morning and the last site I visit at night.

$25 a year is really nothing. I mean if you've already internet access then that 50-cents more a week shouldn't be that big of a deal.

Yeah, I was sick of the ads, and figured it was a good excuse to Join the Forum (as opposed to "joining the forum") and paid the Premium. I felt better, too.... like I was actually supporting the community that I've really come to love and in which I feel at home.

I agree with the others. It's not that annoying tho I wouldn't pay a cent.

An alternative to premium membership if you browse with Firefox is to use NoScript. The static ads remain (which is why it's okay to talk about NoScript as opposed to ad blockers) while scripts require your permission to run.

Other than that, Miscellaneous isn't the place to be discussing the ads. We already have about 500 threads on it in QS&F.

Nor are goodbye threads with a complaint (which this is, sort of) encouraged. They always go downhill.

It seems to me if you're looking for people to convince you to stay you've already decided that this place isn't worth it for you. If so, best of luck to you, but this topic is getting shut down.
