How the Ferengi got into space is a mystery to me

drazzz52923849

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Lately i have been watching ferengi episodes of multiple shows and wondering how a species that stupid and greedy could ever discover how to build a warp drive. Episodes that bring me to this consensus are ENT: Acquisition, TNG:Ménage à Troi, and TNG:The Price. THOse are just a few examples. The only episode that any ferengi has shown anything that would indicate a brain is in TNG:Suspicions.

Two possibilities:

1) They weren’t always as stupid and short-sighted as they are in the 24th century.

2) They acquired the technology from somebody else, presumably a somebody else who doesn’t observe the Prime Directive.

You sound like you haven't seen DS9.

Are you saying that Rom or Nog aren't as smart as any human?

Rom who was the brainchild behind the minefield in DS9, and Nog who made Lieutenant faster than Geordi went from Lieutenant to Lieutenant Commander.
I think you're missing the point of the Ferengi if you're so fast to dismiss them.

Are you saying that Rom or Nog aren't as smart as any human?

It’s made quite explicit that Rom and Nog aren’t normal Ferengi.

Of course, they’re surely not the only abnormal Ferengi, and it’s possible that other abnormal Ferengi were responsible for any Ferengi technological developments.

If you went up to your average person texting on their cellphone, would you ask "how did humans ever create these wonderful communication devices?"

The masses are carried forward by a minority imo.

According to Legends of the Ferengi by Ira Behr and Robert Wolfe, the Ferengi bought warp drive technology from the Breen.

Some very intelligent Ferengi scientists probably invented warp drive, sold it to the highest bidder, and then demanded royalties any time someone used it.

There's no profit in stagnation.

We ran into plenty of smarter-seeming Ferengi in TNG than Rom and Nog, it's pretty unfair to judge them all by the dumbest one's example.

Hell, the technology invented by a Ferengi is what helped the ENT crew destroy a Borg ship once.

Indeed, I thought the show also stated the Ferengi acquired warp drive from another race, though I don't think the Breen were specified.

And besides, Ferengi do have scientists, Dr. Reyga for example. It's logical to assume there could be plenty of damn good scientists. After all, the Ferengi are greedy bastards, the scientist with the most cutting edge breakthrough would be in a position to demand plenty of latinum.

That'd be my guess.

When?

The Ferengi may be greedy, but NEVER stupid.

In fact they may be one of the smartest and most cunning races we've seen. To be that focused on profit, they'd have to be.

I've always liked the Ferengi. I agree with The Wormhole in that their scientist are motivated to develop new technologies for financial rewards. It's a shame they were portrayed as barely sentient monkeys.

I feel like Ferengi do what ever it takes to make a profit. They knew that staying on their own planet would never be as lucrative as spreading across the galaxy, so that's what they put their minds on and either invented it or bought it.

Would you say that the Apollo program was conducted by "normal"/average humans? ;)

2) was what I kind of figured as far as that goes.
