Just Witnessed a Shooting

And I have to tell someone, but I can't call my mother because she'll only worry, and everyone else is out.

I left my apartment to get Silk soy eggnog because I had a major hankering for something sweet. The bodega is several blocks away down the avenue, and as I turned the corner off my street onto the avenue I heard a lot of yelling and screaming. At first I thought it was coming from the apartment building directly across the street from mine, because there were young men running in and out and someone yelling at them to get back inside. However, as I passed the building I saw a crowd of maybe three dozen at the other end of the block, and then heard the gunshots. The screaming got louder for a moment and about a third of the crowd dispersed, running down the side streets. I immediately called 911 and watched the crowd for a minute while they took my report. The police came quickly, 14 or 15 cars, and an ambulance -- so quickly I suspect someone must have reported the fight before the shooting broke out.

I told the police what I saw, and then went for my soy milk. On the way back from the bodega I walked by the scene, on the opposite side of the street (I figured with 30 odd cops there and the crowd mostly gone and quiet that it was safe), and overheard a cop say into his radio, "Three males shot."

What with the alligator on one end of my street last month and the shooting at the other end this month, it's turning out to be quite the eventful season in the hood! In seriousness, though, I hope the men are alright.

I'm glad you were in no danger, but I don't blame you for not wanting to tell your Mother.

I'm curious about the details of the incident. I wonder if there was one shooter, or if they all shot each other. Maybe they were fighting over an alligator.

Wow. Good to know you weren't in danger. Telling your parents might really not be a good idea if they worry easily. There was a shooting in my street recently (I wasn't even home) and after that my father felt the need to give me instructions how to behave if I ever got into a shooting. He worries a lot about everything.
Also, an alligator? :vulcan:

I used to hear a lot of loud noises outside the trailer park when I lived in Modesto. Thank God none of those "fireworks" poked a hole in my trailer, or my noggin.

If those guys were hoods though, maybe trying to mug somebody who happened to own a gun, I can't truthfully say that I'm sorry for them.

Glad to hear you're okay, tsq! Where we lived previously, there were numerous occasions where you'd hear gunfire, and the police were always dropping by. It's rough. I hope you've got a good baseball bat, tire iron or Yanni album lying around for defense.

Blimey, tsq, you sure drop in with a bang! :)

Glad you're okay. And if you find a story online about it, drop us a link.

I dont blame you for not wanting to tell you mother. hell, my parents don't know and i've seen three. all fatal, and one of them was a police officer. i dont know how far you were or if you actually saw it happen, but take my word for it. close range its not a pretty sight.

just be glad you weren't in any danger. and watch out. one of the shootings almost turned into a gang war over here.
to quote a, now late, friend of mine. "stay frosty and watch your six."

Wow, quite scary. Glad you're OK and hopefully they'll be alright (since the ambulance did get there quickly). Not sure how I would have acted in that situation, but you definitely did the best thing possible.

Soy milk:barf::p Just kidding, that's not all I took away from that story. That's pretty fucked up, glad I don't live in NY. or any other big city. I was born in a small town, I can breathe in a small town....John Melloncamp now in my head.

Wow, I'm glad you weren't injured by any stray bullets. Good that you seem to be taking it well, that kind of thing would have scared me quite a bit, but Sweden is kinda docile overall compared to NY.

Glad you're OK, tsq. My first apartment in Vegas, I was woken one night by gunshots. The guy across from me had been gunned down on the steps. According to the property manager, it wasn't really a drive-by--he was part of a violent love triangle. I still moved the first chance I got.

Definitely don't tell your mom. She can't do anything positive about it, and she'll only worry.

People overrate the insecurity of big cities. Per capita, the violent crime rate in rural areas is generally about on par with that of urban areas.

Anyway, glad to hear you're okay, tsq! I can only imagine how unsettling that must be.

Indeed.

If they just shot the croc instead, we could be talking about shoes and handbags instead bodybags.

Yeah, I'd never tell my mom. And no, she doesn't lurk here! I haven't seen anything about it on the news, but then, I never watch local news.

I'm not one to get unsettled, but thanks. :)

This is something I wanted to address too -- crime happens in small towns just as it does in big cities. Frankly, I feel much safer walking around NYC late at night , what with it's constant crowds, than I do walking around suburbia after hours!

And soy nog is the bomb!
