Design Enterprise-F Contest and novels

Yeah, STO and the books each do their own separate things.

Besides, if "that timeframe" means 2409, there's no reason to expect the books to reach it in the foreseeable future -- unless they're specifically STO tie-ins like The Needs of the Many. The novel continuity is only up to 2382. It would take a long time for the books to advance 27 years.

doubt it, STO is already in an alternate timeline to the novels...
My question was more about licensing issues than continuity.

Besides, the Luna class exists in both timelines as well. And Cryptic is already working on implementing the Vesta class.

Are they? Interesting. :) I don't really follow Star Trek Online but I'm interested in the artwork. I'll watch out for their "translation" of the Vesta design.

Well, as a rule, Trek licensees borrowing from other licensees is a matter of choice on a case-by-case basis. We draw on those elements we find appealing or useful and disregard those that don't fit our needs. Kinda like how TOS Remastered used the Vanguard station design for the space station in "The Ultimate Computer" but made it half its intended size so it wouldn't overshadow the starships.

I'm sure that there will be some conceptual cross-pollination among the various Trek licensees, as there has been in the past. But it won't be mandatory. If one of the novelists decides the STO version of the Enterprise-F is really cool, they may write something that incorporates that design. But if they have a story in mind that requires postulating an entirely different type of ship as the E-F, then they'll do that instead.

@Deranged Nasat
If the Luna is any indication, the Vesta is going to look exactly like Mark Rademakers design used on the Zero Sum Game cover.

@Cristopher:
I see. Thanks for clearing that up. I was under the impression that CBS could actually force designs on you (besides the obvious canon ships of course).

Well, naturally, as licensees we have to follow CBS's lead. But STO is another licensed tie-in, not canon.

Besides, I just don't see it becoming an issue. Like I said, there's little likelihood of the main novel continuity catching up with the STO timeline in the foreseeable future.

of course, there was already a 1701-F (with Captain Data in charge) in Imzadi...

Right, alternate timeline, the 1701-F class?

Don't forget the other, short lived alternate-future 1701-F from The War of the Prophets.

FWIW, I'd like to see further Star Trek Online novels. I don't play the game, but I loved The Needs of the Many's retrospective take on the Long War, and seeing the TNG/DS9/VOY characters in their later years. Another novel, perhaps splitting interviews with a traditional story (vaguely along the lines of The Romulan Way, but with Jake's chit-chats in place of the historical stuff), would be happily absorbed by this fan.

Does anyone know if TNoTM did well or not? IIRC it had a (comparitively) high-profile release in the US.

Interestinly enough in STO it was Captain Data in command of the NCC-1701-E, becuase Coutdown is in the backstory so it could happen.

Everytime I see STO all I can think about is the Soldiers of the One from Caprica.:scream:

I agree. I loved The Needs of the Many and I love STO itself. I love the wild frontier feel of that game. It's like the perfect blissful world of TNG just imploded under the weight of it's own smug arrogance and the heroes of the STO world are a bit more primal, more 23rd Century hero in their approach to saving the galaxy. It's so much more dangerous feeling that the 24th Century stuff with all of GR's Utopian pretensions flushed down the terlet.

Yeah, but it doesn't really line up with the game since STO gives the impression that the conflict with Species 8472 never really went hot before 2409.

It should get really good after season 3 comes out in a few weeks.

Or it'll get cancelled and replaced by some sort of flash game aftr a while, and we'll wait years for a proper game which will turn out to be set in 2509... But with some expansion packs for the original game, of which only the even numbered ones will be any good.

I've got your Enterprise-F right here:
