Vulcan/Human Human/Vulcan

ngc7293

Commander
Red Shirt
I looked around and I really didn't see what category to put this in. It might fit into Gaming or it might fit into Fan Fic. If I word it right, though, it might fit here :)
What I want is a Human with Vulcan traits (this would be for a PBeM) but not so overboard like a Vulcan/Betazoid
I know Spock is part human but he seems to be more Vulcan than Human. He chose to suppress his emotions as we all know.
I had the idea to create a character that was some thing of the opposite. The character has a Vulcan Father and Human Mother but has most of the genetic and psychological traits of a human with only a few of a Vulcan. For example a slightly longer life-span (not as long as a Vulcan) and perhaps strong will power like you might find in your typical Vulcan. The only things that would let you know that this person was part Vulcan was genetic markers and her past.

All I really want to know is if it is plausible.

Thanks :rommie:

Well any kind of Vulcan/Human hybrid without the assistance of genetic engineering or medical intervention is pretty implausible - a Vulcan sperm could not fertilise a human ovum for example plus the mother's blood keeps the foetus alive and Spock & Amanda had incompatible blood types (putting it mildly). If genetic engineering & medical intervention is required then the gloves are off and your 'hybrid' child can possess whatever traits of either species that you choose. Simon Tarses in TNG the Drumhead had a Romulan ancester but he seemed to be pretty much a human with pointy ears.

It's your character.

Just make it so.

Far more implausible things have made it onscreen in Trek, IMO...

Actually I created an NPC for a Trek game I ran: a Human/Romulan hybrid. Who was raised by humans.

He was born on Nimbus III, his mother was Romulan and basically in exile. His father was a farmer. I decided that his family was killed in Sybok's uprising. So, he was taken in by his father's family on Earth, who never knew of his mother's true background.

At some point in his teens he somehow found that his genetic pattern did not match the Vulcan norm. So, with some help, he would rig his medical check-ups.

He was a Starfleet officer and quite loyal to the ideals of the Federation. But he never went through Kohlinar. So, he was an emotional "Human/Vulcan" hybrid by all appearances. Much like Simon Tarses.

Not sure this helps, but there it is.

No matter what has been fouled up in in Star Trek, I like to come up with ideas that are at least Possible. I've seen too many dumb ideas in the PBeM games. Perhaps it comes from seeing too much of the bad things in trek and wanting to make things right :D

A lot of ideas presented in Star Trek border on the impossible. Its really not a show built on the possible, but on what makes for a good story. Go with that. ;)

Since Vulcan-human hybrids require genetic engineering to get them to exist, it's plausible that the characteristics could be tweaked to favor the greater strength and longer lifespan of a Vulcan or any other inborn trait: anything physical is inborn and a lot of personality traits are strongly inborn (while others are not at all). Not sure if "strong will" is a Vulcan trait, or if it is, an inherited one.

One thing to keep in mind is that Vulcans are more violently emotional than humans and since they've had to implement stringent social controls over the generations to enforce logic and tamp down emotionalism, that implies it is an inborn, genetic trait that won't just vanish from the population through social engineering alone.

We've already seen a character in trek that was more Human than vulcan - Sybok. And we all know how well that turned out.

The Vulcans say that, but I'm not 100% convinced it's true, that they are inherently more savage than humanity and that there would not have been some possible philosophy that would have allowed them to have emotion and self-control at the same time. The Vulcans we have seen out of control are Vulcans who have had no practice at controlling and expressing emotion simultaneously the way a human does.
