Daniel Day-Lewis to Star in Steven Spielberg’s LINCOLN

According to the press release, the film is still based on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s excellent book Team of Rivals with a script by award-winning writer Tony Kushner.
Filming is expected to begin in the fall of 2011 for release in the fourth quarter of 2012 through Disney’s Touchstone distribution label.

No Vampire hunting in this one. Great casting choice, in my opinion. I'm a fan of all involved so far.

DDL's Gangs of New York co-star Liam Neeson was linked to this role for a long time. Perhaps he's felt to be too old for it now. I don't mind though, as Day-Lewis is a much, much better actor, IMHO.

Coincidentally, Day-Lewis was supposed to have been first offered the role that ultimately went to Neeson in Batman Begins.

Maybe Neeson can play the vampire-hunting Abe!

Neeson and DDL seem to be competing for the number of real life people they can play. Day-Lewis has Kakfa, Christie Brown (My Left Foot) and Gerry Conlon (In the Name of the Father) under his belt and now Lincoln. Neeson has Michael Collins, Oskar Schindler and Alfred Kinsey.

And both played r/l characters in The Bounty: Day-Lewis as Master John Fryer and Neeson as Petty Officer Charles Churchill.

Are they going for someone they think can pull off the character, which is hard because who know what Lincoln was really like?

Or are they going for a look-alike, which is close but DDL doesn't really have have the schnoz.

True; I didn't mention it as I wasn't sure if those were real crewman or just made up for the movie.

Neeson also played a real-life character in K-19 The Widowmaker and Day-Lewis was in Ghandi, presumably playing a real person there too.

Neither did Henry Fonda, but a little makeup and he made a great Lincoln. Based on his past work, I think Day-Lewis will probably do quite well in the role.

^ Yeah, he looks more like Lincoln than he does e.g. Gerry Conlon. Expect him to lose weight etc so as to resemble Abe all the more.

I'll believe this when I see it. I thought this movie was suppose to be made about a decade ago.

^ Day-Lewis is a much better actor than Neeson, IMHO. Personally, I don't want to see a Lincoln who speaks with a Ballymena accent ...

Great choice, I have the script for this that I've been meaning to read but haven't got around to it. I'm glad there is progress on this film.
