CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till release

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

A little patriotism wouldn't hurt. I think Hollywood really is afraid to be as patriotic about America in its movies as it used to be. Maybe they're afraid it'll come across as obnoxious (it kind of did with that New York bit in "Spider-Man"), but there are certain heroes who really need it for their movie to be true to their spirit/history. I'm reminded of an article about "Superman Returns" speculating that this is why we never heard "truth, justice, and the American way" in "Superman Returns". Perry White only asks, "does he still stand for truth, justice...all that stuff"?, and I agree that this was a glaring omission. Superman without that "American Way" bit just doesn't feel right.

Don't forget too the decision to DeAmerican GI Joe. That really did wonders for that film...

When you go Captain America, the flag-waving and patriotism comes with the character. We don't need to see another character turned into a loathing, selfish anti-hero. That's not Captain America.

Tom Hanks apparently doesn't think WWII has zero moral ambuguity. He said in an interview with Time Magazine before The Pacific came out that we wanted to destroy the Japanese because they were different than us. He said the only way to fight a war like that was to kill them all, ignoring the fact that the Japanese refused to surrender until the bitter end.

Funny after watching Scott Pilgrim vs The World, Chris's character in that movie reminded me of Wolverine.

Tom Hanks should actually understand history before he starts espousing it.

They know what does well at the box office and more importantly what doesn't - and overseas markets matter a great deal to them. No one outside the United States is interested in American grandiosity, nor will the majority of Americans younger than a certain age treat the kind of displays being discussed here other than ironically. What's being discussed, after all, is not so much patriotism in any substantial sense as it is flag waving.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

Mind you, I don't think that there is anything wrong with Captain America flag waving as long as it is established as a part of HIS character and not the overriding theme of the movie. He is a symbol and he believes in himself as a symbol. That disconnect with modern ideals is what could make him somewhat baffled by modern sensibilities and quite interesting to watch as a result. However, by that point he'll be in an ensemble so I'm expecting him to hit the ground running when he's thawed out for the sake of brevity.

So we've seen a Hydra mini-sub, some motocycles and now about a tank?
"Last night was so awesome! They were filming some kind of battle scene. There were hundreds of soldiers in uniform and a handful of HYDRA armoured vehicles driving around. It was so cool. ..."

An armored transport?

Also, I know in the Avengers cartoon thread a big fuss was being made about Nazi's actually being mentioned or shown by name. Perhaps Joe Johnston's narrative of this picture will help as it pertains to the movie at least.
17541L.jpg

Red Skull about to evaporate a trio of Nazis who have come to confiscate his technology to serve the Reich. Hugo Weaving was really the only choice for Red Skull. ....
Now does this mean we see swastika's that separate these men from the Hydra sub-group I don't know but Johnston identifies the men he's about to kill as Nazi's.

Man, Hugo looks supervillain-ish enough as a normal guy in Uniform...

Frankly, it's pretty funny how a Drag Queen turned out to be so good at being ruthless villains.

I'm coming around on the Hugo casting. He looks great as Johann, can't wait to see him as Skull. Dream Lord is there beside him too!! I confess that I'm getting more excited for this movie as more pictures are released.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

For awhile it seemed like The Invaders were not going to be in the movie at all, replaced with the Howling Commandos.
Now it seems at least one Invader is appearing.
Union Jack.

While JJ Feild will play the character of Union Jack in the upcoming 'Captain' film, director Joe Johnston has officially denied the inclusion of his fellow The Invaders squad member 'Namor: The Sub-Mariner'.

So will the Union Jack costume be given as much authenticity as Caps? I do hope we get to see him in a version as close as possible while honoring the era appropriate style that Cap's has.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

looking at his credits, i hope he's able to do a decent English accent seeing as he's been in The Bill and Heartbeat.

some have suggested he's the guy in the red beret in the background of the back-the-camera shot of Cap with the triangular shield.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

From the pics on his IMDB page, he looks like a guy from the 1940s!

Read the article today and my anticipation for the film is pretty much in the dumps. Hollywood liberalism destroys another American institution. Johnston says Captain America is not a flag waver...he's dressed as a flag, you douche! This movie "is not so much about America" then what is is about, Denmark?

Steve Rogers was so patriotic that he volunteered for a dangerous experiment so that he could serve his country. His patriotism shaped his character. He's Captain America, not Captain Lukewarm American or Captain Global Citizen but that's Hollywood for you.
When you go Captain America, the flag-waving and patriotism comes with the character. We don't need to see another character turned into a loathing, selfish anti-hero. That's not Captain America.
Sorry, but from your posts it seems the only one who don't understand much about Cap's motivations and appeal is you. Have you actually read the comics? Or are you basing your analysis on "he wears a flag, he's called Captain America, of course he's about America, rah-rah!". He's much more than that.

That's awesome Union Jack is in it!! Johnston stated the other day that Namor isn't.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

^ I wonder if that's because of a rights issue (it's unclear who has the rights to Namor; Universal, Fox [as mutant/Fantastic Four character], or Marvel itself), or if the writers/director felt a character of his power-set was inappropriate to the kind of story they were telling. If the latter, I wonder if this might curb the inclusion of Spitfire?

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

^ I think it's a rights issue. IIRC Sony had the rights to a Namor movie at one stage - there was talk of Jonathan Mostow directing. I'm not sure if the rights have relapsed to Marvel yet.

Re: CAPTAIN AMERICA-shooting July 2010:Casting, Rumors, Pics till rele

I'm pretty sure that it's a rights issue which is why no Namor movie has actually been produced but only rumored. I remember all the Dwayne Johnston as Namor rumors when he was still in the WWE as the Rock!! LOL
