Leonard Nimoy attached to "The Hobbit"?

I'm not sure if this has been brought up or not, but the IMDB is claiming that Leonard Nimoy may have a role in Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit"

I think he would be a wonderful choice for that film. Does anybody know anything about this?

If this is true, I would also love to see him as Smaug. However, considering this is from IMDB (and who knows what the Brazilian website's source is), I'm taking this with heavy dose of salt. Seems like a bit of a coincidence considering "The Ballard of Bilbo Baggins."

While it would be cool, and not totally implausible seeing as Nimoy seems to be rather bad at retiring from acting, I'll wait until I see something from a reputable source before I get too excited.

He did, but there was recent news that he'll be coming back to Fringe, in an episode with Christopher Lloyd.

And his first series of episodes on Fringe (not to mention appearing as Spock Prime) came well after his first "retirement" from acting back in 2003.

Well, even after Nimoy's first retirement from on-camera acting, he continued to do occasional voiceover work. So the idea of him being cast as the voice of Smaug would be compatible with his current retirement (although I have heard that he's returning to Fringe). Whether it's compatible with anything else connected to reality remains to be seen.

Rumors are it's Bill Nighy that's been cast as Smaug's voice.

If they have to recast Saruman (since Sir Christopher Lee is too old and frail to fly to New Zealand), Nimoy wouldn't be a bad choice.

If that's the case I'd bet they'd just shoot Christopher Lee's stuff in England and use tech-wizardry to insert him into the movie before they'd ever really recast him. His voice pretty much made Saruman in the Ring movies.
