Prejudices

I try my best to interrogate my prejudices. I think it's next to impossible for people growing up in - well, I suppose in any culture - not to subconsciously internalise shitloads of unfair stereotypes. The thing to do is to try to be aware of them. Then you can weed them out and change your thinking.

I despise people who cannot keep their word. In particular solemn oaths.

Friends and co-workers who get married then commit adultery or get divorced for example. When you say "until death do you part" or something similar, in front of your family and friends, you'd better keep that oath.

The other example I just loath is military deserters. Three soldiers went AWOL from my unit while we were deployed in Iraq. Two of them I considered friends. Now they're gutter-trash of the worst sort in my eyes.

Don't make a vow or swear an oath unless you really mean to keep it.

I think you and Joshua Howard put it well. We should always be working on our prejudices, but the idea that we can grow up in human society and avoid all prejudice is laughable I think. What we *can* do is work to mitigate it and actively combat internalized prejudice.

I'm prejudiced against people with no common sense.

Like morons who text while driving.
Or use the internet while driving.
Or talk on the phone while driving.
Or do anything while driving EXCEPT focus on their driving.

Me too. That irritates the crap out of me. It's so dangerous and unnecessary.

Another thing I see a lot is women putting make-up on as they drive to work in the morning.

I assume they're all self-absorbed idiots.

But is it really a prejudice if it's true??

I guess I'm prejudiced against people who talk too much. It irritates the crap out of me when they do that. Small talk, meaningless talk, is a big pet peeve of mine.

I hate the New York Yankees.

And the Jews.

I kid!

But really, I have a real hate-on for inefficient, inconsiderate, inattentive drivers. Too fast or too slow, doesn't matter, just pay attention to what the hell you're doing and move with the flow of traffic without being an obstructive ass!

As the saying goes, it isn't prejudice to hate assholes. Because nobody was born an asshole.

I don't know. Probably. I just needed to vent my frustration. I have a friend that cannot stop staring at his cell phone under and circumstances and (ironically) needed him to drive me to the doctor Thursday since I can't drive, and he (of course) focused on his phone instead of the road. When I asked him if he was answering a text, he replied (after several failed attempts to get his attention), that no, he was playing a video game, and that set me off.
