New Macbook Pros out anytime soon...?

I need to upgrade mine as it's the older Discrete model from 2007, and while it performs ok with menial tasks I am starting to move into Blu-Ray and 3D video processing, and really need the power of an i7 to help.

Do we know if the Macbook Pro line will be upgraded again in the coming months or should I just bite the bullet and get one now?

It's not too bad, but it does take flippin' ages to render or export! :)

EDIT: Just saw the i7's didn't come out until mid-2010. I guess it's gonna be a while!

Actually, I'd expect new Pro's before the end of the year based on the historical trend: http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#MacBook_Pro

Though the Buyer's Guide says so, but a real update isn't expected before Q1/2011, when Intel releases Sandy Bridge, as the current offerings of Intel will only give a slight speed bump to existing lines.

Are Apple likely to implement that though? We're still waiting on USB3... :D

USB 3 takes its time due to Intel not having implemented it yet.
Last I heard, that Intel will wait till 2012 to deliver chipsets with USB 3.0 in order to have an advantage with Lightpeak, which is also due to be delivered in 2012.
But USB 3.0 might come sooner to Intel, though I'm not 100% sure about that.

And Apple will most likely implement Sandy Bridge as the last MBP update will then be 8 to 11 months old.
The last update cycle was lasting 10 months.

If you are still interested, you can find countless threads about this on MacRumors.com via MRoogle.

See Lacie are helping out with USB 3.0:

I have to laugh though; Jobs is unwilling to implement it yet, which means you'll have to use a Express Port with the driver... which is only available in the 17" model.

Stupid Apple. Dropping the Express Port was a poor decision for the 15". I know 7 people with 15" Unibody models and none of them use the SD slot, and 4 of them really need to use a Express Port. The 17" is just too large and clumsy.

Jobs has almost nothing to do with it, it is Intel, which has to implement USB 3.0 into its chipsets for Apple to use it.

But Apple and Intel want to push Lightpeak, thus USB 3.0 will not get that much love, but recent rumours suggest, that USB 3.0 and Lightpeak might come in early 2011, but we'll see.

And I had to get the 17" MBP after my 15" MBP with an ExpressCard 34 slot was stolen and the 15" did not have that slot anymore. But the 17" is much nicer with the bigger resolution anyways.

The primary reason USB 3.0 is not being heavily pushed out is because they want LightPeak to take ground.

The fundamental problem with this though is that USB is much more wide-spread and has standardized interface.
LightPeak would take time to gain a foothold... still, if the interface is fast enough to transfer huge files in low amount of time and has a 'universal' interface, then I don't care which one 'takes the cake'.
