free programs to convert movie file types?

Hi, I recently got a high-definition camera and it records in AVCHD/mpeg 4. Can you guys recommend any free programs to download that would let me convert that into some smaller, more managable format like avi or mpeg 2?

.mp4 does seem to be the format of choice nowadays.

A while back it was .divx, but even PowerDirector has dropped that as an output format.

And sometimes, converting to a different format actually makes the filesize larger.

MPEG Streamclip might be able to do that, it even has a Batch List (Command + B in Mac OS X or Control + B in Windows) to add hundreds of files and let the PC convert it to whatever you like.

Btw, AVCHD footage uses an MPEG-4 codec variant, thus it is very space efficient regarding its HD resolution.
MPEG-2 is an older codec than MPEG-4, thus the target files will be bigger than the source, if MPEG-2 even allows you to do 1920 x 1080 or 1280 x 720 as output.

.avi is a container/format for a variety of video codecs, the most notorious ones are MPEG-4 codecs like Divx or Xvid.
.mp4 is another container, which uses H264 (MPEG-4 codec variant) to encode its video.

As AVCHD already uses an MPEG-4 codec variant, though depending on the camera, with a high bit rate, you might not get that much smaller file sizes without loss of visible image quality.

I hope that helps in some way or the other. :)
