eBook Formats and Readers ?'s

I never did buy an e-Reader. I'm glad I didn't. The prices have dropped so much since last year. DRM and rapidly changing technology are important things to consider before buying one. But the one thing that keeps me away is the price of the e-Books. The newer novels cost the same as the paper novels. I was under the impression the biggest cost of a book, was printing it. So why are eBooks not a buck or two less than printed books?

^ Actually, less than a dollar of a Mass Market Paperback's price is the printing. Paying the writers, editors, copyeditors, advertising, management, etc is by far the largest portion. And even with that, publishers struggle to break even with most books.

I don't see the point of the NookColor - seems like a wannabe micro-iPad to me. Definitely not what I want to see in an eBook reader. I wonder what Amazon will do, if anything, to go against Nook. I've not heard anything.

Huffingtonpost had a whole article on it. They just neglected to mention that it has a backlit screen like an ipad. Honestly, I don't think Amazon needs to respond. I doubt the nook color is going to be a big seller. It might result in the ipad cutting its prices, though.

Poor sales will probably be better reason they cut the price of the Ipad.

Im still waiting for Zero Sum Game to be on the ibooks store even thou it was available for preorder with the release date of a few days ago. Though im not sure how the ipad sales are going, i just know when i purchased mine, i went to every store in my area which is NYC and thats a lot of stores and they were all sold out, this was just two months ago, i ended up getting it at the apple website and it took 3 weeks, so i doubt they are having a problem selling them, i dont see the nook as being a major competitor especially for people who dont use the ipad just for reading.

I know early on they were hard to find. But, I thought there was a story last week that said iPad sales were weaker than expected. So Apple stock took a hit. I looked it up and the hit was because the margin on the iPad is very low and that is where most of there sales are coming from.

The original and wifi nooks will remain available, supported and likely to have further hardware revisions like the inclusion of the pearl screen in the near future since the screen they're currently using isn't being made any more. B&N's strategy is to keep the eink screen reader around for folks who just read books, but then also have the color variant around for people who want some of the tablet features along with their ereader and don't care about how much nicer eink is for reading.

As doubtful as I had been about it from the first few glimpses, it actually looks like B&N put together something pretty snazzy with the NOOKcolor Im not particularly interested in one for myself, but I might be tempted down the line if the apps they let into their own little store are any good. Or maybe just to hack into a cheap android tablet.

“The only factor limiting production is the availability of key iPad components, such as the Field Fringe Switching (FFS) LCD panels, projected capacitive touch screens and NAND flash. Despite ongoing yield issues, Apple’s suppliers have steadily increased monthly production to meet Apple’s demand. Production rates are now on target to meet the expected strong fourth-quarter sales,” she added.

By the end of the year iSuppli expects the iPad production rate to approach or exceed 2.5 million units per month.

iSuppli has increased its 2011 shipment forecast to 43.7 million iPad units, up from 36.5 million, and expanded its 2012 outlook to 63.3 million units, up from 50.4 million previously.

2.5 million units a month is nothing to sneeze at. Adoption of the iPad is faster than pretty much any new technology including DVD. Apple also has some of the strongest margins in the business. They've got room to maneuver on price if necessary. They don't have to. It's still selling out as fast as they can make them.

seriously, what with all the different formats? i was thinking of getting an ebook reader (kindle) but this is just ridiculous.

i think i'll stick to the old copy pasta technique where i buy the book on the pc, open it and copy paste it into a .txt file which every modern PPC or cellphone can read. guess my pda2k wont be retiring after all... :techman:

Most readers support DRMed ePub (which is already something of a standard-format). The Kindle doesn't.

I just bought the Adobe version of Zero Sum Game for my Nook, but I can't get it to load on my computer. When I first downloaded it, I hadn't gotten the Adobe Digital Editions, but now I have and when I try to open the e-book it says that something hasn't finished downloading. When I tell it to finish it says that it I get an error that says:
Error getting license
Server communication problem:E_ADEPT_INTERNAL
What do I do to get it onto my computer and then onto my Nook?

What you do is when you get asked if you want to fix the error, say no. Go back to where you purchased Zero Sum Game and redownload the ACSM file and then hopefully ADE will work. But before you do that, did you register ADE with Adobe? Did you register your nook with ADE?

What I want to know is who is in charge of the eBook for Zero Sum Game. Whoever it is botched it up big time. The ePub is supposed to be using embedded fonts and the CSS doesn't have all the code needed to use the fonts. I had to strip the DRM, go into the CSS and fix it up. Now the copy I have is the way it should be.

I got it from S&S. I've decided to just give up and take the loss of $$ as a lesson and get the Nook version.

The format you bought the book in isn't supported by the Nook. You need an ePub-version: like this.

I don't believe there is any difference between the SS version and the one you provide, The nook should support the purchased at each place becuase it's Adobe Digital Editions that authorizes the book for use on the nook. The mistake a lot of people make is beieving the acsm file they download is the book. It is not! It is more like a holder and when doubleclicked it opens ADE and ADE downloads the ebook as it authorizes it for use.

I got the exact same error on 2 different computers. I tried what you suggested with no luck. I think the problem is with S&S. I sent them a message 2 days ago and again yesterday but have yet to hear back anything. I gave up and got it for the Kindle App on my iPod.

This is why DRM is such a waste of time, all it does is frustrate legitimate consumers - I could get a pirate copy* in 30 seconds flat and it's less hassle.

* note I'm not actually doing this and not recommending this.

Perhaps thats why there seems to be a delay on the apple ibookstore, it was available for preorder and come release date it disappeared, ive been dying to read this, im hoping that apple fixes this soon, it's rediculous that i preordered a book with a specific release date, now 4 days later its no where to be seen.

No Kindle doesn't support ePub. But with Amazon being the biggest online book retailer it really does not matter. You also do not get the problems/confusion with buying from different retailers and trying to get it to work on your reader.

For now, I am not aware of any ebooks that are out that are not available on Kindle and at the same if not lower price than the competing store.

With B&N now switching to a backlit LCD screen I see the nook as less than the Kindle, Sony, etc. Backlit reading and only 8 hours of battery life is a real bummer. I just dont see the point in what they did with the new Nook considering the new android tabs coming onto the market that do more.

I know how Adobe Digital Editions (the programme) works.

But there is a difference between Adobe Digital Edition (the format - which doesn't work on the Nook) and Adobe ePub.
And S&S offers Zero Sum Game only as an Adobe Digital Edition but not as an epub so far as I've seen.

Well, it's not so hard to work with (or around) DRM with your legally purchased ebooks.

But I love beam-ebooks.de for offering the Perry Rhodan-series DRM-free (as per the wishes of the publisher)

I just don't like being tied mostly to Amazon with the Kindle.

In many cases I've paid less at booksonbord.com for an ebook than I would have paid for the Kindle-version of the same book.

B&N is NOT switching to an LCD screen. They only widen their product line by adding a different kind of device to their catalogue.
