wanting doctor who dvds

When I google for the dvds, I see “Seasons 1-4” or “Series 1-4" and such. These aren’t the old dvds, right?

What exactly do these mean, seeing as there’s a US-UK difference? Where can I find the recent seasons (US definition), from Eccleston onward, at a decent price? And are there collections of the earlier shows, also at a decent price?

Correct. Classic Who isn't even released in series/season sets anyway (with one exception).

It simply means the first four series/seasons of the new show. Keep in mind that the specials that aired in 2009 are in their own set, called "The Complete Specials". Get that with the four season sets and you'll have everything that has been released on DVD so far.

Both Amazon and DeepDiscount.com offer each season set in the $60 range. The Specials set is cheaper.

For the most part Classic stories are sold individually. There are some collections, but only one that's of a whole series/season (Series 24, known as "Trial of a Time Lord", Colin Baker's final season.)
List of Doctor Who DVD sets
Maybe someone else can help you with finding good prices on those.

i bought quite a few from half. example: i got Tomb of the Cybermen for about $5

Further nitpick, it's five actually.

EDIT: DOH! "released ... so far" makes all the difference! Series 5 hasn't been released yet!

The Amazon price for pre-orders on S5 is sub $60. Or wait for Amazon third party sellers to get in that range after release (could be awhile).

Any way you look at it, "decent price" is an misnomer.

Thanks all!

Yeah, “decent price”--I was hoping for something lower, but maybe I’ll get lucky.

Boy, Sf fans are really taken by prices more than most series. Sucks.

That's true to some degree. In the early days of DVD, a sci-fi fan would quickly go broke collecting Star Trek & The X-Files. However, it's now possible to find new copies of The X-Files for only $15-$20. Most of the Star Trek sets I see now are usually in the $30-$50 range. That still feels a bit pricey sometimes but it's much better than the original asking price of $150. Plus, at least you're usually getting about 26 episodes per set.

The new Doctor Who seasons are highway robbery, charging $50-$100 for only 13 episodes (plus the occasional Christmas special). But then, that seems like par for the course for BBC Video. They usually do a pretty high mark-up on other short series as well, such as Robin Hood, Torchwood, Primeval, & The Sarah Jane Adventures.

Almost there..... It comes out November 9. My birthday is November 19. Guess what's at the top of my list?

Well, $50 isn't too bad for the latest series at least. Especially since it looks like they're adding a bunch of extras.

Where the classic series DVDs are concerned, the restoration work, commentary and extras (including the standard 30 - 60 min making of documentary, location and other doccos and in some cases 5.1 audio and added cgi effects) are almost worth the asking price alone, so I don't mind so much. There is usually a lot of work gone into them.

Amazon's prices for Series' 1-4 individually are higher than the S5 pre-order price.

Good thing there's 3rd party sellers. It really depends on how long you're willing to wait to get a "decent" price.

I've run into the "why don't they release complete seasons of the classic series" question a few times. Here's why they don't.

First, of course, none of the seasons from 1963 to 1969 exist in complete form anymore, with many episodes missing from the archives. And while we technically have all the 1970-74 era episodes to view, a number of them require extensive restoration/colorization work to be considered releasable on DVD. (You won't see classic Who on Blu-Ray until they fix the format to be more friendly towards old videotaped productions).

But the main reason is that BBC Video/2 Entertain have decided to make Doctor Who the most thoroughly documented TV series release in history. With only a handful of exceptions every story (and of course each story consists of anywhere from 2 to 14 episodes) has commentary, a behind the scenes documentary/retrospective, video featurettes, DVD-ROM content, and other stuff. There have even been a few releases that include "TOS Remastered"-style upgraded versions (though unlike the original releases of Remastered, viewers have always been given the choice of watching one version or the other, or else the upgraded versions have been included separately as movies). Right now BBC Video is in the process of reissuing some of its earlier releases to include additional featurettes. This is a far cry from most TV series releases, especially vintage shows, that you might be lucky to have a couple of talking head interviews and commentaries. The original Mission Impossible was released without a single special feature included on any of the sets.

The tradition is continuing with the revived series, as each individual episode is accompanied by a 45-minute Doctor Who Confidential documentary, though thus far only a handful of full-length DWCs have been issued to DVD or Blu-Ray, primarily because they'd have to double the number of discs in the set to include the whole thing (ignoring music and footage licensing issues for the moment).

Personally, I think it's a great way to release the classic series. And it allows us to pick and choose the stories we want. If you really don't want The Twin Dilemma clogging up your collection, you can ignore it. And in the rare case where a series of connected stories occurred, such as The Key to Time, they've been kind enough to put them out as box sets (though North American releases are sometimes issued separately, such as the recent Kamelion Tales set).

Last year a member of the Doctor Who Restoration Team was quoted by the Canadian Doctor Who Information Network as saying BBC Video plans to continue releasing Classic series stories in DVD until at least November 2013. My assumption is, for those with deep pockets, someone like Amazon is going to offer a "motherlode set" of everything around that time (there was in fact a "mini-motherlode" set issued a couple years ago, IIRC). And of course there's always the hope a new codec or something will come along that'll allow HD-format issues of Classic Who (and Trek TNG, etc) without the need to make wholesale revisions.

First, of course, none of the seasons from 1963 to 1969 exist in complete form anymore, with many episodes missing from the archives.

Although Seasons 1, 2, & 6 are fairly close to being totally intact (as opposed to Seasons 3-5 which are almost totally gone). IIRC, Season 1 is totally complete except for "Marco Polo" & a couple parts of "The Reign of Terror." Season 2 is totally intact except for a couple parts of "The Crusade." And of Patrick Troughton's last 7 stories, all but one of them are completely intact. The only missing story there is "The Space Pirates." (I consider "The Invasion" to be complete. The animated replacement episodes are good enough for me.)

However, I can't say that the modern Doctor Who Confidential is as interesting as the docs on the old series. The modern stuff is mostly promotional fluff. On the old series, they're much more comfortable talking about warts 'n all.

And in the rare case where a series of connected stories occurred, such as The Key to Time, they've been kind enough to put them out as box sets (though North American releases are sometimes issued separately, such as the recent Kamelion Tales set).

R1 tends to only release box sets when the stories go together chronologically, like The Beginning, Dalek War, Key to Time, E-Space, New Beginnings, Black Guardian, & "The Trial of a Time Lord." The only non-chronological set they've ever released in R1 was the Beneath the Surface trilogy, and those 3 stories were also released separately.

Two exceptions actually. Seasons 16 & 23 (not 24) are both available as boxed sets.

Technically Three.

Classic-Series 4 has so few episodes remaining in existence that they were all released in the Lost in Time Box Set.

Well, ignoring The Tenth Planet.

:p

Do tell! I was reading in another thread that the S5 extras are a bit lacking compared to past seasons.

We get the newly filmed things which have been mentioned a few times, however at the same time we've only got commentaries on about half the stories (and none with Matt Smith), nor do we have any of the the numerous deleted scenes.

Plus (although I'm not bothered about this) they've also removed the 'Next Time' trailers from the episodes on the DVD set...
