Cameron's passed on "Cleopatra" and has agreed with 20th Century Fox to start work on the next two Avatar movies.

The movies will be released in December of 2014 and 2015.

“AVATAR is not only the highest grossing movie of all time, it is a created universe based on the singular imagination and daring of James Cameron, who also raised the consciousness of people worldwide to some of the greatest issues facing our planet,” said Rothman and Gianopulos. “We had no higher priority, and can feel no greater joy, than enabling Jim to continue and expand his vision of the world of AVATAR. This is a great day in the history of our company, and we thank Jim, Jon Landau, Rae Sanchini and all of their team and all of our Fox colleagues throughout the world, who have made this possible.”

AVATAR is the highest grossing film of all time, taking in nearly $2.8 billion in worldwide box office. It is also the top-selling Blu-ray disc of all time. AVATAR won Golden Globe® awards for Best Motion Picture and Best Director; and was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and won Oscars for art direction, visual effects and cinematography.

That's great news. Avatar was absolutely fantastic, IMAO, and I'm looking forward to these. :) :techman:

I read this this morning and saw no need to post it.

James Cameron is such a crazy fucker I will believe the sequel will come out when I'm watching it. He has said so many things about the movie(s) (like the fact he said one sequel, two sequels, one sequel) that I don't believe anythnig until he makes them and I see them.

However he should really take his time and write a decent strip last next time. So far I have only found one person who thinks it was quite original and well, he's an idiot who doesn't watch sci-fi.

That didn't take long.

I've seen maybe three "original" movies in thirty years, and none of them were sf/fantasy - and I've learned that the stuff that struck me as novel when I was young was, in fact, just stuff borrowing from other stuff that was older and that I was unfamiliar with ( I mean, I thought Star Trek was original when I was twelve). So honestly, that's a criticism that wastes my time.

If the next two films are as well conceived and as well-written as the first, they'll be great and just continue its unprecedented popularity and success.

My point isn't that it's original or not, it's not and I'm fine with that. It's that there are idiots (like my friend who doesn't like sci-fi, that's what makes him an idiot) who think it's the best movie ever, best story, best acting, best writing, when it's none of those. It was an awesome fun experience in the movie theater and I hope the sequels are the same. I just hope that the writing doesn't feel so rehashed.

Part of me also believes that maybe Cameron made the movie so damn dumb to get people to care about a new sci-fi franchise / movie. It worked for the last Star Trek movie.

The movie did what it's supposed to, it was tons of fun and made money, I guess I'm just kind of sick of the unwarranted hype.

Plus once again Cameron is fucking insane, so I never really trust him with anything time wise. Once we get some leaks from a script then I'll care more.

Ah yes. I remember these conversations from about a year ago! Yes, IMAO, the Avatar script was average at best and severely outclassed by the world-building and visual effects. But I actually expect that the scripts will be a marked improvement for the sequels. Now that Cameron has the world established with the first, simplistic film, he can bring in more character and plot complexities to create a story worthy of the world he's constructed.

Then again, I too wonder if Cameron can hold true to the 2014/2015 timeframes. If it came to that, I'd rather he'd get the films done properly than on time.

12 hours ago everyone thought the NZ film industry was on the brink of collapse.

Now we have the Hobbit and two Avatar sequels to make!!

:D

Meh! Not a massive fan of the first one.

Me either. The visuals were certainly impressive, and it had Sigourny Weaver in it. But I think I liked the basic plot-line better when I saw it in Lawrence of Arabia, Dances With Wolves, and The Last Samurai.

I'm actually somewhere between the opinions posted so far, in that I very much enjoyed "Avatar", but I'm not too interested in sequels. I saw the film, liked it, and now it's done with. I don't think dragging the experience out is going to be a good idea in my case. I like putting a sense of closure on things, and to me one film was enough. My response is too attached to "Well, that was enjoyable" to embrace "now for part two!" I'll guess we'll need to wait for 2014 to see if that's my loss or not! :)

I thought that the plot was trite and nothing we haven't seen before in other genres but it was an enjoyable movie with some good acting and action scenes. I'm looking forward to the sequels.

I wonder which screenplays he will adapt this time... if I should guess it would be:

Bambi for AVATAR 2 and
101 Dalmatians for AVATAR 3... would mirror the originality of the first film.

Anyway... just my opinion. I hope the fans will enjoy those films. I know I won't survive another attempt to watch one of his movies... I miss the James Cameron who brought us ALIENS, TERMINATOR and THE ABYSS... what happened to that director - who as able to take risks, to think revolutionary - again?

I saw Avatar once and have no intention of seeing it again. Can't say I'm excited about the sequels.
