Displaying your Trekkieness....

When she was a teenager, my wife had a pair of black-and-white pet lab rats. One was black with white patches, the other was white with black patches. Yup, she named them Lokai and Bele.

Before I start, I don't believe there's anything even remotely embarrassing about liking a television show. I unashamedly love Star Trek, a franchise that's given me immense pleasure over the years.

- I own every episode of Star Trek (as a whole) and have purchased them multiple times: VHS, LaserDisc, DVD, Blu-ray. (marketing man's dream).

- I attend conventions/events and enjoy obtaining autographs, of which I have numerous.

- I own a fair amount of memorabilia, publications and models.

- I watch at least 4 or 5 episodes every week.

- I watch each movie several times at the theatre.

To further refute the de facto image of a typical fan, I am happily married and have never encountered problems attracting the opposite sex previously.

I am not overweight, unfit or in any way unhealthy - quite the opposite.

I have a professional position of employment.

A friend of mine, John Broughton, is making me an absolutely authentic Captain Kirk uniform (third season version) which I believe I'll wear to Shore Leave this summer.

Back in the 70s and 80s I used to make and wear costumes to conventions and even to a couple of movie openings. When I went to freelance at TNG a couple of the hard-core Trek fans who worked in key positions on the show took me aside and explained that being seen to do this would be a really, really bad idea as far as dealing effectively with the producers was concerned.

I attended six sci-fi conventions so far, and once allowed a friend to take a picture of me in (another friends) Starfleet uniform while giving the Vulcan hand salute. :D

I have DVDs of all the series (except the animated series) and all the Movies, a ST mug, a bust of Spock some ST socks and some ST cuff links. All the memorabilia are presents. I watch two or three episodes most days.

Oh, also I go on some forum or other I can't remember what.

Well, let's see...

I have the DVDs for TOS (non-remastered--too expensive, as of now), TNG, and DS9. Working on VOY.

I have every single movie--on DVD: TMP (Director's cut), TWOK, TSFS, INS, NEM, and TREK-XI; on VHS, eveything else.

I also have on VHS "Journey's End: The Saga of Star Trek The Next Generation" and "Star Trek 25th anniversery special"

I have hundreds of Trek novels--much of which I have yet to read--and still getting more!

I have the Encyclopedia, the Chronology, Star Charts, The Star Trek Stickerbook (the stickers are all unused); the old Starfleet Technical Manuel; the TNG companion, the DS9 Companion, the VGR Companion, both of Nimoy's "Spock" books, Shatner's Star Trek Memories, Nichelle Nicols's Beyond Uhura...I'm probably forgetting a lot.

Anyway, I also have quite a few older issues of the old Star Trek, The Magazine. My favorite is the August 1999 issue. Guess why. ;)

I have a "nuSpock" shirt (the blue one)--or maybe it's a "nuBones" shirt, because of the short sleeves....

I have a "MegaBlocks ProBuilder" Enterprise-D set...old action figures of Picard, Data, Geordie, and a Borg drone...

And of course...I built myself out of Legos...a DS9-era phaser.

No conventions, yet.

I was completely obsessed with Star Trek during my teen years, but my interests and mental landscape broadened considerably during college, and has continued since then.

^^^ I would love to have a model collection like that.

I have a half dozen models.

Ds9 and TOS on DVD.

Countless novels and comic books.

Brannon Braga's autograph, which I obtained when he was still working on TNG. I had him sign a card with his picture on it. As he was signing he asked me my name. I told him it was Joe, but he addressed it to JoJo for some reason.:wtf:

And I have attended two Star Trek conventions.

I'm not sure if I'm quite like some of you guys too much:

-From time to time, I'd watch Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Star Trek: Deep Space 9, in respective order of what gets most of my viewing time.
-I own a couple of Star Trek related books; Captain's Glory (by William Shatner), and I Am Spock (by Leonard Nimoy).

Other than that, I don't do too much Star Trek related stuff. I consider myself a fan, but maybe I'm too casual to be a Trekkie.

Was it around the time the whole Worf/Troi fiasco happened? If so, Braga may have been smoking whatever he was smoking to think he should steal Beauty and the Beast from Disney...easily the most hated thing ever on any Trek period for me.

Hi Everyone, I don't post much but this is a great thread. I'm a 'out of the closet' proud Trekkie and everyone knows it. I have all the DVDs, toys etc but I mostly like signed pictures. Its like a souvenir that I met them.
For my Bachelorette party all my friends and I dressed up in the classic Uhura style dress and hit the town. I would have got married on the bridge of the Enterprise if the Experience hadn't shut down. Instead we coincided our wedding around the Official Convention in Vegas this year and I went down the isle to the TNG theme tune!
I've recently started to seek out others like me, hence joining here and attending more cons.

Its great to hear people bragging about being nerdy for once!

While I have a strong streak of "Trekkieness" in me I do manage to keep it compartmentalized. I like displaying some of my stuff, but not to extremes. That said, Forbin's display of models kills me---I love it! :techman: Otherwise unless I actually tell people I'm a Trek fan no one knows by my appearance or behaviour. Note I'm not trying to hide it at all, but just that my interest in Trek doesn't permeate all aspects of my life. And I'll add that many of the Trek fans I know are very much like myself.

Yesterday while we're taking a dinner break during one of our quarterly inventories a bunch of us started talking about conventions. Of course there were one or two folks who held preconceptions of such events and that's when I chimed in with my experiences...

Most of the folks I met and seen at conventions are normal everyday folk. The ones in costumes are as normal and inoffensive as you can get. Wearing a costume is no different than dressing up for Halloween and they're just having innocent fun with other like minded people. The one or two oddballs I've seen or encountered over the years were dressed in normal street clothes and there was an aspect of disconnect with them. In their case I think it was often a case of Trek being their only interest and nothing else and hence the tendency to obsess about it that could alienate them from others---hence their varying degree of social awkwardness.

I've never gotten around to wearing a costume at a convention, but I've always wanted to and still do. One day I'll make one and I'll do it.

Yes this occurred during the seventh season of TNG when Braga was producing what were probably his most wacky episodes. In fact Sub Rosa had just aired, which I think is the yuckiest Braga romance of all, worse even than the Worf/Troi pairing. Braga asked the crowd at the convention if they had liked the episode and was given a little bit of polite applause but was met mostly with awkward silence.

Hmmmm.... well me being a fan of Star Trek is no hidden fact, but it's not like I go around telling everybody I meet

'Hello _____, my name is _____ and I'm a huge fan of Star Trek, so how are you today?'

As for displaying it.
Well,
-I own all of the films on DVD and working on owning the entirety of DS9 at the moment (of course I only buy when I have spare cash and I have nothing else I need/want more at the time)

-I own a couple of Dr Bashir figures (one of FC uniform and the other from Trials and Tribble-ations)

-I have the IDIC symbol as a tattoo

-I've been to a few general TV/Film/Comic book conventions and dressed up in (mirror)Trek uniform for one.

-My Patrick Stewart, Kate Mulgrew, Tim Russ and Andrew Robinson autographed pictures are proudly displayed on my walls, as well as some random non-autographed glossy HQ photo's of characters

-I'm currently drinking hot chocolate out of a Star Trek mug XD

As far as I go as a person, I'd say I'm relatively normal. I have a good job, some close friends and a normal, comfortable life. I go to a dance class and an aerobics class everyweek

I also have various other loves within the entertainment industry as well such as Korean and Japanese music, various films. I probably seem more obsessed with Inception at the moment, but that's cause it's all new and I'm sinking my teeth into it (and loving every moment)^_^

Reminds me of a line from the original The Blues Brothers.

- "What kind of music do you play here?"

- "Well, we got all kinds. We play both country an' western."

I love that line. I like to drop into conversations on occasion. Most dont seem to get it. ( But I keep using it!!!)

I'm a pretty low level fan on the "stuff" front. Books and DVDS are about it. A few Christmas ornaments and a foam core mounted poster from First Contact. ( a gift from a friend) And two tribbles.

I'm not a fan of conventions. I've gone to maybe four in my entire life. So no pics of actors or autographs. Though I did attend "Star Trek Earth Tour" about 15 years ago.It was a exibit that was set up at Paramount's Theme Parks that had props and costumes from the franchise. I do have pictures of my wife and I on a transporter pad and at the controls of the E-D. I enjoy that sort of "museum" experience better than a con.

I did have a small website for a while that was about the ships and uniforms used in Trek. ( It was presented as "in-universe" with a mix of real and conjecture) But there are so many other ones that were better, so I let it die. It was fun though. Part of it was my take on a prequel series, which I started before Enterprise was announce. Creating that was about as geeky as I got on that end of fandom. If I had the the funds I might go "Cawley" and make it someday. :p Now that I think of it, I'm actualy acquainted with one former member of Trek's art department! (Berman Era) I'm less than six degrees from GR!!!!!

Oh yeah, married and not over weight.

That is a beautiful collection, Forbin! I used to build ST models. I showed one of them to my local hobby shop (where I had made the purchase) and the owner asked me if he could display them as they were finished! That period of time was one of my proudest moments, aside from my kids. I keep saying I'll start building again, but never seem to get around to it.

It was the late 80s and early 90s. I used black light paint to do many of the windows, bussards, etc. so they looked like they did on screen. The shop owner built a black light display area for them. He told me it increased sales for him, so he started giving me models and supplies for free. I never tried the artificial aging that I see on many models since that time. (Then again, Trek did not usually show aged ships anyway.)
