And this is what he said, revealing among other things, the shock news that Wolverine is not Popeye (do I need to put a spoiler code round this?):

Hugh Jackman talked to Vulture about Wolverine 2 and in doing so, confirmed that Darren Aronofsky is directing.
"I'm starting; I'm having my six meals a day," he said about the preparations.

With Aronofsky directing, this will not be a usual "X-Men" movie. "This is, hopefully for me, going to be out of the box. It’s going to be the best one, I hope," he said, "Well, I would say that, but I really do feel that, and I feel this is going to be very different."

He added that he doesn't think Aronofsky's penchant for dark drama is at odds with the big-budget franchise. "This is Wolverine. This is not Popeye. He's kind of dark," Jackman said. "But, you know, this is a change of pace. Chris McQuarrie, who wrote 'The Usual Suspects,' has written the script, so that'll give you a good clue. [Aronofsky's] going to make it fantastic. There's going to be some meat on the bones. There will be something to think about as you leave the theater, for sure."

Anyone excited or has the general dislike for its predecessor removed all enthusiasm for the mutton chopped mutie?

I was over the whole deal after that unwatchable pile of crap - not to mention that the character of Wolverine seems pretty much designed only to appeal to the adolescent male psyche. As completely sexy as Jackman is, he's often in such stinkers that even getting to watch him half-naked can't save them. But, The Usual Suspects scribe is a pretty big sell. I'm pretty 'meh' about Aronofsky, honestly. I thought Pi and Requiem for a Dream were wildly overrated. Loved The Fountain though. It might be interesting to see how his drug-induced/ dream-like style meshes with Big Budget Hollywood 'Splosion-filled Blockbuster.

I'm happy as a flying pig. As much as I hated "Wolverine" with a passion and want everyone at FOX to die painfully for the shit they've scourged us with over the years, this just became one of my top five most anticipated future films.

I'm really happy about this as well. Hopefully Fox will stay the fuck out and mind their business and allow them to make the movie they want to. It has been reported that Chris McQuarrie's script adapts the classic Miller/Claremont mini-series and if that proves to be the case I think this will more than make up for the piece of hard to flush turd that the first film was.

Despite hating the first one (even though it had a coouple good parts), I'll give this a chance with Aronofsky at the helm. Jackman (or any of the rest of the cast) wasn't the problem with the first one, so it'll be good to see him get a second shot, and hopefully Aronofsky's presence means the studio is taking this more seriously.

All I want is a decent 2 hour film and not some cameo laden one hour and thirty minute movie like FOX has churned out for the past 5 years.

Hopefully it'll be better than the first one (which I thought wasn't that bad but no great shakes either).

Hope they have the guts to actually let Wolverine smoke and stab people with his claws in this one.

It's been a while since I saw Wolverine, but I know he stabbed people with his claws and I seem to recall him having a cigar in his mouth at one point.

I don't recall him ever doing anything with his claws other than branishing them menacingly at people, which doesn't carry a lot of weight when he never follows through. And he had a cigar in his mouth almost constantly, but unlike the X-Men movies, he never actually LIT or SMOKED it.

I could be mistaken on these things, but I don't think so. But there is no way I'm watching that POS movie again to double check. ;)

The very first thing that happened in the movie was young Logan's bone claws popping out for the first time and subsequently killing the man who was actually his father with them.

I think they showed him killing some Germans with the claws in the opening montage.

Besides that, he stabbed Victor multiple times, the shitty version of Deadpool multiple times, and I think he got a few random henchmen as well.
As far as the cigar goes, is it really that big a deal that it wasn't lit? Like you said, it was often there. Besides, Joe Quesada has a pretty strict anti-smoking policy for depictions of main characters that appeal to young readers/viewers because of smoking related deaths and health issues in his family, so that may be the reason why Wolverine didn't light up in the film; although I really don't see the difference if he's already got the cigar in his mouth. It certainly didn't stop the AMA from criticizing the film for potentially influencing kids to smoke.

Surely of all the criticms that can be levelled at Wolverine, the amount of smoking done by the title character must rank pretty low on the scale.

The smoking was indicative of the larger problem with the movie: They toned down the character to try and sell the movie to the largest possible audience -- thereby removing most of the qualities that made him an interesting character to begin with.

And yes, I know about Quesada's anti-smoking policy in the comics. I'm sorry that he's had lung cancer deaths in his family, but I still think it's a dumb policy. I never once thought smoking was more appealling because the Thing, Wolverine, Nick Fury or J. Jonah Jameson did it, and taking their cigars away took away a good prop and a bit of character definition.

That was probably the second largest problem.

The largest would be that it was just poorly made all around.
